Chris Nelson’s Saturday Rosehill Preview Posted on March 14, 2024March 15, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 More Group 1 racing on a big day at Rosehill. We kick off the card with a Midway & as usual valid cases can be made for many runners. I’ll lean to the very consistent HUON on an each-way basis. He’s only won 4 of 22 however has figured in the placings on a further 8 occasions & the engagement of Zac Lloyd is a positive pointer. BLACK DUKE is doing nothing wrong, up in the weights however from that inside draw should land a good run in the race. Can find spots for nos.3, 8, 13 & 16, may still have missed the winner! Numbers: 6 – 1 – 13 – 16 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 Really liked the look of the ex-UK galloper DASHO LENNIE first up when charging away to victory at Sandown. That was over 1600m whereas his best form back home was between around 2000-2400m. Second up whilst still on the fresh side 1900m suits & he could well be the one to kick off a big day for James McDonald. Another import CIRCLE OF FIRE made his local debut at Flemington recently also over 1600m, pleasing effort he too will enjoy the longer trip today. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet: Backing top 2 selections to win. RACE 3 Second last of the Golden Slipper lead-ups with the big one only a week away, this is for the fillies. On paper there doesn’t appear to be too many winning chances & I’m going to lean to FLY FLY who ran a good second to the smart Manaal last start running on from the back courtesy off a wide draw. Can see her settling closer today from the favourable gate & from there she’ll get her chance. CASTANYA was scratched from a very winnable race last Saturday, issues perhaps? She’s now 3 weeks between runs however has Switzerland form lines, market leads will be a good guide. Confident one of the pair win. Numbers: 3 – 2 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 3 selections in exotics. RACE 4 It’s the males turn now in the Pago Pago. Going with the debut winner GATSBY’S who is trying to gain last minute entry into the Golden Slipper. The stable do rate him & he was strong winning on debut overhauling Roselyn’s Star who won well on the Kensington track Wednesday. From the good draw J. Mac will have him in a good spot from the start. PARKOUR the hardest to beat, without doubt going to be better placed over further however if close enough to strike in the straight will be in the finish. COLEMAN & the widely drawn ANODE in the mix. Numbers: 7 – 2 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet: GATSBY’S TO WIN. RACE 5 LINDERMANN will start around even money or possibly shorter & that still might be a good price as he looks extremely well placed coming off a game 3rd in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant second up behind Think It Over & Fangirl, what price either of those two in this race! He’s unbeaten at the track over the distance & should gain a perfect run from the favourable draw. JUST FINE led & folded right up in the same race, he’s better than that & his second up record is a good one, improvement likely. ATHABASCAN can also improve with the first up run under his belt. Numbers: 3 – 4 – 8 – 6 Suggested Bet: LINDERMANN TO WIN. RACE 6 Going with the first up AIRMAN however I’ll be keen to see what the market does with him. He’s a horse who caught my eye last prep winning with authority second up, he then was thrown in the deep end placing in Group 3 company before finishing 6L behind Imperatriz at Group 1 level down the Flemington straight. RED CARD was dominant first up, had the best run of all time stalking the leaders & that could well be the case once again here from the pole draw. HARD TO SAY is right in it should the track remain dry. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 5 – 7 Suggested Bet: AIRMAN TO WIN (if not a noted drifter). RACE 7 Very open race the Phar Lap where I’ll go with the second up SALTCOATS who ran well when resuming back in February over the shorter trip. He hit the line solidly on that occasion & I like him being kept fresh up to the longer trip this afternoon. MAKARENA looks the toughest to beat, chased home Caballus in the Eskimo Prince first up before just over 2L away at Group 1 level the latest. Keen to see how MARE OF MT BULLER fares, very promising this is a big step up in grade & she likely wants further now. Numbers: 5 – 14 – 15 – 9 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 8 The Group 1 Coolmore Classic is the days highlight & very open as you would expect. VIENNA PRINCESS gets the nod on an each-way basis as she races well here, fires second up & with the speed likely on up front will be storming home at the right end. ZOUGOTCHA returned to form first up & maps perfectly for J. Mac off the inside draw, proven this track & trip. TROPICAL SQUALL’s a ripper, just how much work she does to go forward from the wide gate will likely seal her fate. No favours at the draw for KIMOCHI either whilst my ‘roughie’ is MORE SECRETS who will be strong late & likely goes around overs. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 14 – 6 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 9 At the odds I’ll stick with the very consistent ROBUSTO who has had nothing go right his past couple when beating all bar the winner. Held up two back he was then posted deep the latest yet closed the margin on Welwal whom he again meets today. Perfectly drawn here he’s due for a change of luck & with no weight on the back should he get it look out. AMOR VICTORIOUS is flying this prep; he’ll roll forward once again & take plenty of running down. DEMOCRACY MANIFEST was sound running on first up & keep in mind did win second run back last prep. Numbers: 12 – 13 – 5 – 8 Suggested Bet: ROBUSTO EACH-WAY. RACE 10 Going with the obvious in this final race being TAVI TIME however I’m not keen to take red figures. Yes, he’s very promising & yes he was dominant winning first up showing a ‘turn of foot’, however he steps it up a notch here & there’s a couple racing well enough to make sure he earns it. I speak of WHINCHAT who won two straight before out of the money in Group 3 company last start parked on speed in a fast run race & GENTLY ROLLED who is such a consistent animal, he rises in grade however gets some weight relief. Numbers: 7 – 9 – 6 – 10 Suggested Bet: TAVI TIME TO WIN ($2.00 or better) Market Market
