Chris Nelson’s Saturday Randwick Preview Posted on January 22, 2026January 22, 2026 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 We race at Randwick in Sydney on Saturday under warm sunny skies on a good rated surface. The meeting gets underway with a 2yo affair where only 2 of the 11 acceptors have race day experience, market leads will be all important. Not overly excited about the wide gate however (9) MISS SCANDAL did catch the eye in her latest trial going to the line in third spot camped behind the leading pair with what looked like plenty to offer. Drawn the pole gate (2) ZAMBALES should run well, both trials sound, latest was a workmanlike win wearing down the leader without being overly pressured. Another to have drawn well (7) HOME AND DRY has also shown up positively at the trials. Numbers: 9 – 2 – 7 – 6 Suggested Bet: Market?/MISS SCANDAL. RACE 2 Mile midway this week where near enough to $7.00 the field was on offer Thursday. I’ll lean to (14) ALLEGRO MISS who although dropping back in distance today looks well placed this grade. She was good two starts back in similar company before the win & drops nicely at the weights, her overall form of late has been extremely consistent. (7) ARTFUL PERSUASION should be getting close, placed 2 of 4 this time in work is rarely far away. (6) ZENMASTER a chance on the run two back, didn’t run the 1900m last time out, drop in trip should help. Numbers: 14 – 7 – 6 – 10 Suggested Bet: ALLEGRO MISS EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 3 Trainer Matt Dunn comes off a very successful weekend winning last Saturdays Highway race down here as well as a very controversial Magic Millions Guineas on the Gold Coast with Torque To Be Sure. His record in these Highway races is outstanding & he can keep the run going with the very much in form (10) KINGDOM UNDERSIEGE who has impressed winning both runs this prep. Yes, this is a harder race however only lightly raced he’ll keep on improving & can measure up. (5) JOISELLE the logical danger, placed all 4 starts this prep the past two at this level. The widely drawn (7) SATIN STILETTO has the form, peaking third-up however will need luck from out there. Numbers: 10 – 5 – 7 – 18 Suggested Bet: Box up top 3 selections in exotics. RACE 4 Looks a suitable race for (1) PRETTY POWERFUL who was a first up winner, second up placegetter. Don’t expect him to lead off the inside draw however he won’t be far from the action & with a clear crack in the straight can run over the leaders aided by the 3kg claim. (8) BELLA CORAZON keeps running good races, her 8th two back here is her only recent blemish & that was even a good effort when held up! (5) CINSAULT can bounce back with luck from the wide draw. Numbers: 1 – 8 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: PRETTY POWERFUL EACH-WAY. RACE 5 Keen on the chances of (6) SOUND UNUSUAL who I thought may just have needed the run last start when rising 1600m to 2100m. That worked out to be correct as he just ran into one better on the day however didn’t shirk his task one bit. The added fitness & drop back to 2000m looks the ideal set up. No knock on the southern form of (11) TRAPALANDA, I highly doubt Jack Callan will take any of his 1.5kg claim however still gets in nice & light. Don’t see too many winning chances in this race. Numbers: 6 – 11 – 2 – 9 Suggested Bet: SOUNDS UNUSUAL TO WIN. RACE 6 Low level race. He’s done precious little in recent times (1) GATSBY’S however he did show encouragement at his first up run making ground from the back of the field after being taken back from the extreme outside draw. That was also his first run for Joe Pride & we know how good a trainer he is. From the good draw I’ll likely give up on him should he not do something of note here. (3) BUNDEENA is close just needs luck from the wide gate, Rawiller can generally make his own so don’t overlook. Include (4) APPLAUD. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 4 – 6 Suggested Bet: GATSBY’S EACH-WAY. RACE 7 Early tactics all important here with the well fancied (3) SUN GOD. Should J. Mac roll the dice & go forward he likely finds a spot & importantly settles in front of his main rival (6) WELCOMETOTHESHOW in the run who although drawn more favourably doesn’t show any early speed. To the surprise of nobody, I’ll side with J. Mac. (7) ROLLINGMAGIC should get the right run in behind the speed, needs to lift a little however by no means out of it. Numbers: 3 – 6 – 7 – 8 Suggested Bet: SUN GOD TO WIN/Saver WELCOMETOTHESHOW. RACE 8 The day’s feature is the Listed Carrington which tells us the autumn carnival is on our doorstep! Open race, the odds on offer about (7) FIRE STAR look very appealing on an each-way basis. Yet to tackle 1400m I liked the way he fought right to the line behind Hidden Wealth in the Buffering (1300m) at Eagle Farm. Back to the trials for a win (always a good pointer from this stable) he should park off speed in what looks a solidly run race & close late. Southern visitor (13) JUSTADEEL resumes with a good fresh record, market? Ditto (3) MATCHA LATTE who resumes for a new yard. Numbers: 7 – 13 – 3 – 6 Suggested Bet: FIRE STAR EACH-WAY. RACE 9 The second-up (3) CANDLEWICK looks well placed for Zac Lloyd from the favourable draw. Solid fresh at her first outing for the new yard she gets back to her own sex today & although up in weight she did carry big imposts to win 2 of her past 5. (11) BESIDE THE OCEAN missed a placing at Wyong however the run was a good one, just too far out of her ground she ran home well late & should appreciate the additional 100m. (5) SUPER NORWEST resumed in good style & is a very consistent galloper, wouldn’t be overlooking. Numbers: 3 – 11 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 10 Last start Wyong winner (2) ALTHOFF has been in very consistent form this prep & fully deserved the last start win. With the 3kg claim he drops a kilo & from the favourable draw lands a good run in the race. (3) PUNTIN comes out of that same race at Wyong, hard to see him turning the tables however keep in mind he ran a career best figure second up last prep when winning. (4) CAPTAIN FURAI has had the 3 trials which should have him ready to go fresh & he’s got the right combination in his corner. Numbers: 2 – 3 – 4 – 7 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. Market Market
