Chris Nelson’s Saturday Randwick Preview Posted on October 19, 2023October 19, 2023 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 The 2yo’s kick off the day & we don’t have a lot to work with, only the single runner to race so far & that’s BLUE ILLUSION who was well beaten on debut at Flemington as a well fancied favourite. There were plenty of excuses post-race & I’m happy to give him another chance here. The Waterhouse/Bott trained THE THREE HUNDRED & the Team Hawkes runner AGENDA SETTER both won trials & look ready to go on debut. Numbers: 3 – 8 – 2 – 10 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 1800m Highway, this won’t be an easy task! AMARANTZ may be the safe option here coming out of the same grade last start & drawing an inside gate. He rises only 0.5kg in the weights & has won up to 2000m. WHODAT hasn’t been exactly lighting up the track in Queensland however this race lacks depth & there’s no more successful trainer in Highway company than Matt Dunn. FAY’S ANGELS can run into a placing. Numbers: 2 – 4 – 5 – 12 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 3 The Midway looks similarly as tough as the Highway! Going to lean to the very consistent PEACE OFFICER who drew 14 of 15 last start with his 60kg & was only beaten just over 2 lengths. He had to give away too much start before running into traffic, prior form good & with even luck here can make amends. SATNESS continues to race well, where will he get to from that gate though? Similar story BUNKER HUT. Numbers: 5 – 15 – 10 – 4 Suggested Bet: PEACE OFFICER TO WIN (small bet) RACE 4 Keep coming back to MARQUESS here however my one slight query is the wide draw, should Zac Lloyd be able to slot him over one off the fence then he’s the one to beat, should they get posted then he’s going to have to dig deep. His latest win was impressive off a soft run & although it was 4 weeks back he has trialled well since. STROKE OF LUCK may take this run however won’t be far away, market a good guide to his chances. The very consistent PIEROSSA definitely in the mix as well. Numbers: 6 – 4 – 8 – 1 Suggested Bet: MARQUESS TO WIN (looking for $2.50 or better). RACE 5 Interesting race with the unbeaten COMMEMORATIVE resuming off just the one start when a strong midweek Canterbury winner back in June. Punters didn’t miss her as she started a short-priced favourite & looked very good charging to the line to win by over 4 lengths. Both lead-up trials sound & if able to avoid getting posted from the wide draw should prove the one to beat. RAINBIEL the toughest to beat, chased home quality opposition all three runs this prep. Numbers: 12 – 2 – 3 – 5 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 6 SMASHING EAGLE may have only won 1 of 6 this prep but he’s been unlucky on multiple occasions & although up in the weights today does drop significantly in grade. He’s a backmarker so everything needs to go to plan, I’ll take the punt it will & he’ll be able to mow down the leaders. In a new yard DASHING LEGEND can run a race fresh, yes he has the big weight however also an inside draw. Numbers: 7 – 1 – 2 – 8 Suggested Bet: SMASHING EAGLE TO WIN RACE 7 CEPHEUS & UNSPOKEN look the two here. The former has clearly the stronger form whilst the latter gets a 9kg weight pull which has to count for plenty. He’s a weight carrier though CEPHEUS & I can’t see that disadvantage putting a holt on his charge toward the Big Dance coming up on Melbourne Cup Day. Tougher task for UNSPOKEN, with his consistent record & big weight drop/advantage he should prove equal to the task. Decent class drop for KIRWAN’S LANE coming back from a Group 1 & consecutive Group 2’s. Numbers: 1 – 11 – 3 – 9 Suggested Bet: CEPHEUS to win/saver UNSPOKEN RACE 8 Feature race of the day. Big return run from COTEHELE at Rosehill charging at Cepheus late to just miss. Held up in the straight there’s no doubt with a clearer path sooner the result would have been different, have to put him on top based on that run. DEMOCRACY MANIFEST will give a start from his wide draw, his form is through the Epsom which is of course very strong, he’s going to be hurtling down the outside at the business end of the race. CONVERGE is the class runner, any return to his better form would see him extremely hard to beat. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 1 – 14 Suggested Bet: COTEHELE EACH-WAY RACE 9 Going to stick with the last start Eagle Farm winner STEELY who made a hit & run visit to score sitting 3 wide all the way, still very strong at the end his previous form lines include some smart types. FLYING CRAZY may not be well placed with an inside draw as he can miss the kick, he’ll need gaps however should they come, lookout. SPANGLER suited out to the longer trip. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 7 – 9 Suggested Bet: STEELY EACH-WAY RACE 10 With a little freshen up I’ll lean to the third-up PIZARRO who has been finding the line quite soundly this time in. He comes out of two sprint home affairs making good ground from off pace on each occasion, hopefully the slightly better draw this time can see him settle a little closer to the lead. Back to easier grade MUCH MUCH BETTER can improve, the claim & good gate are definite positives as well. Other well-fancied chances have drawn car-park gates. Numbers: 7 – 3 – 13 – 15 Suggested Bet: PIZARRO EACH-WAY Market Market
