Chris Nelson’s Saturday Ipswich Preview Posted on June 15, 2023June 15, 2023 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Really liked the look of DEFIANT SPIRIT winning at the Sunshine Coast on debut. Yes, he only beat 4 rivals on a Sunday afternoon however couldn’t have been any more impressive pulling early with the jock easing him 3 wide at the 700 to try & get him to settle. Looming up on the turn he levelled up before powering away over the concluding stages. The unraced Tony Gollan trained filly DEEP DAWN an obvious market watch, looked good winning a recent Doomben trial. Numbers: 3 – 8 – 6 – 10 Suggested Bet: DEFIANT SPIRIT TO WIN RACE 2 SAILOR’S SECRET gets the nod here. Run over late by Sunfall (engaged next race) late at Doomben last start which followed a solid 5th behind Ekaterina in a quality Saturday grade affair. He’s very consistent with a great record here at the track. BECKFORD has good numbers & draws well, big odds may be worth including in exotics. MAGIC CHARLEE has the big weight, he’s a tough customer though. Numbers: 10 – 6 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet: SAILOR’S SECRET TO WIN RACE 3 The previous race will be a good guide to SUNFALL’s chances as he ran home over the top of Sailor’s Secret last start. I’m confident he’ll be winning as he’s been nothing but consistent since joining the Barry Lockwood yard winning 2 of 4 & he just maps ideally here from the good gate. PETUNIA gets back & runs on; not sure the gate is suitable however in the mix. Chances don’t end there. Numbers: 7 – 11 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet: SUNFALL TO WIN RACE 4 Always a tough race the Provincial Stayers Final each year & this is no different! I’ll lean to FLENSBERG who although yet to win at 2500m has won over 2400m & looked to put the writing on the wall last time out here. HILLCREST AVENUE is one paced, should run a race stepping up to the longer distance. READILY AVAILABULL & I AM THE EMPIRE both in the mix. Numbers: 4 – 9 – 1 – 3 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 in exotics RACE 5 EXTREMIST & ORBISYN set the speed here & should run along. That could well set the race up for the big finishing DEEPOUR who closed off strongly first up Eagle Farm & does seem to improve with a run under the belt. He’s going to give a big start so although he’s the top tip I’m not keen to take a shortish price. EXTREMIST will give a good sight, this track suits, she’ll be nailed to the rail. Good gate for SHAMROCK LU who is another who will appreciate the solid tempo. Numbers: 3 – 2 – 6 – 1 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 in exotics RACE 6 FASHION LEGEND hasn’t fired both runs this time in & his chances aren’t aided by a wide draw however he will find this easier & his form last prep was terrific with a win over Yellow Brick in the Magic Millions Guineas the highlight, keep in mind he did win 4 straight before spelling. WEST OF AFRICA maps well, should enjoy 1350m first up & has good ability, I just didn’t like his trial much., that’s my issue. COUNT DA BEANS will be running on fresh. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics RACE 7 DESERT ICON looks well placed to go very close in the Ipswich Cup. He gave Al Aabir 6kg at Rosehill & only went down narrowly, right at his peak fourth up drawn a perfect gate he’ll get his chance. NUMERIAN brings the strongest form lines coming through 3 Group 1’s within his last 4 starts placing at two of them, does have the big weight to contend with however in this field he’s earned it. ROUSSEAU is a roughie with a chance, completely wipe the latest run. Numbers: 3 – 1 – 12 – 4 Suggested Bet: DESERT ICON TO WIN RACE 8 Happy to take the good odds about IRISH SONGS who follows exactly the same pattern as he did when winning comprehensively at Doomben three starts back. Liked his run behind Prince Of Boom last start & here he is in something easier, the inside gate isn’t great however with a gap in the straight look for him late. Nothing wrong with GRAVINA’s form, comes out of the same last start race as IRISH SONGS when trapped 3 deep throughout. PROFIT will have been set for this & is worth including, he’s at his best when fresh. Numbers: 7 – 4 – 9 – 1 Suggested Bet: IRISH SONGS EACH-WAY RACE 9 Wide open race to end the day where I’ll lean to the very consistent SNAPPED who is going to need luck off that inside draw as she’s not one to race on speed. Hoping for a gap in the straight! RUSSIAN CONQUEST hasn’t won for a while however draws well & can find the line, gets her chance. TILIANAM is very consistent & seems over the odds. Numbers: 11 – 15 – 5 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box op top 4 selections in exotics Market Market
