Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on May 22, 2025May 22, 2025 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 The Carnival continues in Brisbane with the Doomben Cup our feature & after a fine week the good news is we’ll be racing on a dry track. This opening race looks a tricky affair where I could easily tip 3 or 4 runners. I’ve settled on (6) HOLY RACKET who has put in two good performances since coming north, yes he rises in weight here however from the inside gate should gain the right run & get his chance. (13) SICILIAN drops plenty in weight & looks very close to a win, maps well as there’s not a great deal of speed about on paper. (1) METALART isn’t at his best on wet ground, forgive his first up run he’s much better placed here. Numbers: 6 – 13 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 (13) TAVS is absolutely flying this prep winning his past couple dominantly at Eagle Farm. He does come up with a very wide draw here & will need things to pan out however with some cover in the run he can unleash once again in the straight. (5) THE INFLICTOR should be ready third run back from a break, first two very good & he gets Rawiller to steer from the rails gate. (20) WEIGALL TIGER has a touch of class & races well when fresh, definite claims if able to gain a start. Numbers: 13 – 20 – 5 – 16 Suggested Bet: TAVS TO WIN ($4 or better). RACE 3 Listed affair for the youngsters where (1) SUNRAYS is the top tip. Yes, she was beaten over 8L at the Gold Coast however the conditions were poor & that was still good enough to see her land second placing behind the highly spruiked Beadman. Unbeaten her only other 3 starts she can go one better today. (11) CHATTERLEY a very interesting runner, placed on debut nothing special however she’s got the lethal Waller/J. Mac combo in her corner, she’s here to win. (2) HA’PENNY HATCH continues to race well, well worth including in exotics. Numbers: 1 – 11 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet: SUNRAYS TO WIN. RACE 4 1110m dash with many of the usual suspects to go around. (7) APPIN GIRL for me who holds a very impressive first up record, she’s been beaten only once in 3 attempts & that was when having no luck down the Caulfield straight. She’s trialled well & can run over the top of these late with her light weight. (3) KING KAPA had no luck whatsoever in the Victory Stakes, just couldn’t get a crack at them, he’ll push on early from the wide draw here & if able to do that without burning too much fuel he’ll be right there at the finish. Can’t catch (1) CANNONBALL however he could blow all these away without surprising. Numbers: 7 – 3 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet: APPIN GRL EACH-WAY. RACE 5 Very open race this one, probably more questions than answers. I’m going very rough putting the filly (14) SHE OURS on top who found the 800m too short first up at Ipswich however did warm up late & find the line. No weight, Angela Jones to steer she’ll be zipping home. (1) MAYFAIR has placings behind Lady Shenandoah & Broadsiding to his name, unplaced his last three he resumes here having trialled ok, market? (3) AMELITA has a touch of class whilst the lightly raced (2) LEAD ME ON is another capable of running well. Numbers: 14 – 1 – 3 – 2 Suggested Bet: SHE OURS EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 6 Wide open affair for the girls, absolute lottery! Couldn’t find any runner I was overly keen on & have landed on the Victorian visitor (4) JENILALA who won at Flemington in Group 3 company first up before on speed & run down at Morphettville in a Group 2, freshened for this. (6) THALASSOPHILE generally fires up here during the winter months & I’ve no doubt that will be the case once again, does she need wet ground though & perhaps one more? (13) TORABELLA has come in for some good support in early markets, she likes to lead & can do just that from the good draw, drier track definitely in her favour. Numbers: 4 – 6 – 13 – 8 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 7 The Group 2 Roses is the main lead up to the Queensland Oaks run in a fortnight, terrific line up of fillies to battle it out. (6) PHILIA gets the nod from me as she’s so consistent, races on speed & is bred to lap up the 2000m. She hasn’t raced for a month however most of her rivals are in the same boat, she at least has had a trial in between & won that convincingly. (10) POLYMINIA & (1) BENAGIL come out of the Adelaide carnival both running well, thought (10) POLYMIA should have finished a lot closer at their latest clash & I’ll go with her to turn the tables. (4) CHURCHILL’S CHOICE a chance also, just a query from me at this trip. Numbers: 6 – 10 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet: PHILIA EACH-WAY. RACE 8 The Group 1 Doomben Cup will see (1) ANTINO start favourite & based on his Hollindale romp a fortnight back that’s more than fair. Basically a carbon-copy of his Toorak win in the spring he went from last to first before the home turn powering clear to the line. He meets mostly the same rivals here however I’d expect a closer contest this time with many of those not handling the Gold Coast track on that occasion. (5) MILTARIZE is an enigma however I’m convinced he can run a race here & is well worth including at odds in exotics. (8) ELIYASS can improve sharply as can (2) LINDERMANN, both race on speed. Numbers: 1 – 5 – 8 – 2 Suggested Bet: ANTINO TO WIN/MILITARIZE EACH-WAY. RACE 9 Final race of the day resembles a mini-Stradbroke. I’m going wide putting the very consistent (17) BOOM TORQUE on top who was well out of his comfort zone on that very heavy Gold Coast track first up yet he ran a very respectable fourth. All his form is on dry ground which he’ll get here, his second up record is good as is his record on this track. I never underestimate (1) YELLOW BRICK who has trialled three times to get him ready for this, solid fresh record. (4) IKNOWASTAR is an interesting runner, best career fresh run was last prep & he’s won a recent trial by a space, definite market watch. Could have easily missed the winner here. Numbers: 17 – 1 – 4 – 12 Suggested Bet: BOOM TORQUE EACH-WAY. Market Market
