Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on January 30, 2025January 30, 2025 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Racing at Doomben on Saturday will be on dry ground. The day gets under way with a 2yo affair in which the debutante BOOMSHANKA & the debut winner DUSHENKA dominate the early market. I’m leaning to the latter although I’m of the opinion she will be suited out over further as her career progresses. BOOMSHANKA & MAKING NEWS both on debut from the Gollan yard come out of the same recent trial with the former prevailing late, by the same token was put under a little more pressure than MAKING NEWS. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 7 – 5 Suggested Bet: Market moves the best guide here. RACE 2 Long term strategy in these distance races isn’t generally to back favourites however IVERSON looks very well placed on his recent efforts. A winner two starts back at Eagle Farm he was then 3 weeks between runs & rising in trip when beating all bar the winner same track last Saturday. No rise in weight or distance this time, maps ideally for Ryan Maloney. CHASSAGNE ran well fresh, rises sharply in trip however I doubt that will concern. The consistent ALDEENAARY next best. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 6 – 2 Suggested Bet: IVERSON TO WIN. RACE 3 Very average bunch. I’ll lean to the consistent OUTBURST who maps well & did race very consistently around this level earlier on in his campaign. ORIGINAL GLAZE wasn’t far away behind a smart type last start & this isn’t much harder, if at all. COMMANDMENT races well for Angela Jones who jumps back aboard this afternoon, improvement wouldn’t surprise one bit & this is not a strong race. THESECONDATPORTSEA has gone up favourite, be wary as although consistent he rarely wins. Numbers: 3 – 2 – 7 – 4 Suggested Bet: Very wide exotics. RACE 4 TORABELLA looks ideally placed to bring up the hat trick in this race. Thought her win at Eagle Farm 2 weeks back was probably the best of her career. She worked 3 wide for the first 600m of the race which was solidly run at that stage, she slotted in briefly before wide again cornering & from there always had the race under control. This is no harder, she maps well & will carry less weight! HARBOURMASTER comes out of the same last start race, never travelled, always wide should be forgiven & will park a lot closer this time around. CUNAMULLA FELLA was good last start & should be peaking third run back. Numbers: 2 – 6 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet: TORABELLA TO WIN. RACE 5 Tempo should be solid should all the leading/on-paced types go around in this race. I’ll lean to ALL STASHED UP on an each-way basis who did find the line strongly very late at Eagle Farm last time out. She’s down in the weights & the additional trip looks suitable. THE FIXER did look to have every chance at the Sunshine Coast last start however is consistent & well drawn. KEMI ZABI is another who can find the line strongly & is likely aided by the solid up front speed. Numbers: 10 – 5 – 8 – 9 Suggested Bet: ALL STASHED UP EACH-WAY (small bet). RACE 6 FUKUBANA did catch the eye first up at Eagle Farm & I have to be with him here. The speed mappers will have him in a very awkward spot around midfield the fence & to be fair a ‘train wreck’ may well eventuate. I’ll put my faith in Andrew Mallyon to get him into the clear & wound up, if that is the case then look out late! PRO FORMA raced wide without cover last start, I gave him a definite winning change on that on that occasion, not jumping off completely here. NO NAME FRANK in the mix also. Numbers: 3 – 15 – 4 – 16 Suggested Bet: FUKUBANA TO WIN. RACE 7 Interestingly KINGDOM UNDERSEIGE has gone up favourite here off a first up Ballina maiden win, decent rise in grade I’m happy to play around him. I’ll back PETTICOAT & SURPRISE HONEY who draw poorly & yes will need luck however recent form suggests they can run well at decent odds. The former comes out of a couple of recent stronger races whilst SURPRISE HONEY although every chance last start strips fitter this time around for the run at 1200m. RUN LUCY RUN may take one run however I wouldn’t be overlooking for exotics. Numbers: 6 – 2 – 3 – 8 Suggested Bet: PETTICOAT/SURPRISE HONEY TO WIN. RACE 8 Should there be any money about for CORFE CASTLE I’ll be following it in here as he maps quite well from the inside draw. He was a winner this track & trip three starts back when drawing inside & leading, that may well be the case again today however a market push will give me more confidence. SLIPPIN’ JIMMY won well fresh, he’ll be up there from the outset once again, hard to knock. DREAM HOUR flew home at Eagle Farm last start when just missing out in a close photo, in no way out of this however I do prefer him at that venue. Numbers: 7 – 5 – 1 – 13 Suggested Bet: CORFE CASTLE EACH-WAY (looking for market support). RACE 9 Keen on the chances of the second-up HATCHET here. He did a good job chasing home the winner at the Sunshine Coast when fresh lumping 60kg against the winners 55.5kg. if able to make some use of the gate & settle no worse than midfield we know he will be strong late, he loves this track & drops plenty in weight. KING KAPA back in grade should improve, just mixing his form of late though. SAFEWORK could easily show up, he’s been quite consistent of late. Numbers: 9 – 3 – 6 – 10 Suggested Bet: HATCHET EACH-WAY. RACE 10 Wide draw for the second-up MINTAKA LAD however I’m more than happy to stick with him. Very consistent last prep he resumed at Eagle Farm with a fast-closing effort just missing out on the line. He will need luck here however I’ll back Jimmy Orman to find a back to follow into the finish. Not an ideal draw for JAYANTHI who tends to get back, should she see daylight she can find the line strongly & holds a very good second up record. Include the consistent DAMO DAYZ. Numbers: 5 – 10 – 6 – 7 Suggested Bet: MINTAKA LAD TO WIN. Market Market
