Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on August 18, 2023August 18, 2023 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Happy to be with the favourite APOPHIS in this opening race who looks to have plenty of ability. Yes, he’s stepping up in grade this afternoon however both Sunshine Coast wins since returning from a spell have been with authority suggesting he’s more than capable of tackling something stronger & with success. MISS TAMBO resumes, trialled ok & does map nicely. Double figures for MISS JAY FOX appeals for the exotics players, she’s an 1100m specialist. Numbers: 9 – 16 – 1 – 6 Suggested Bet: APOPHIS TO WIN RACE 2 Bailey Wheeler’s 3kg claim sees PRINCESS TENKO carry the same weight as last start when having no luck here at Doomben racing wide from a horror draw. That certainly won’t be the case this time around drawn an inside barrier & although yet to win beyond 1200m that can all change today. Expecting improvement from AYAHUASCA courtesy of the good draw. DEEP ROUGE is a complete unknown at 1350m, she was a risk at 1200m last start however did hit the line quite well. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 5 – 6 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics RACE 3 Tricky looking race. ACRES AWAY won at Eagle Farm a fortnight back coming from off speed in an extremely slowly run race, they basically jogged in front. He’s won 4 of 5 overall & & gets top jockey Jimmy Orman to steer, I’ll stick with him. SURREAL ASCOT is an unknown up to 1350m, will lead here & likely softly, might prove hard to catch? GIVE HIM WINGS may be the other on-pacer, DATINKA an improver although rushed to the trip? Numbers: 1 – 9 – 4 – 10 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 in exotics RACE 4 Plenty of ticks here for the third-up HELEVA DEEL who was an eye-catcher at Egale Farm second up really closing off strongly at the end of 1400m. Up she goes to the mile this afternoon, she’ll carry only 52kg after Bailey Wheeler’s claim (his riding weight) & is a winner here at his only appearance. Drawn perfectly she should gain a cosy run, plenty of ticks! I’ve been with WEGOBAM her last few & whilst very honest she just gives away too much start, if she could just settle a little closer… ROSOVO is on the quick back up from last week, big weight drop. Numbers: 5 – 12 – 13 – 6 Suggested Bet: HELEVA DEEL TO WIN RACE 5 Weekly distance raffle, if you like one here don’t let me sway you! HADOUKEN is decent odds & perhaps overs? After a run of consistent form he finally broke through on the Gold Coast Poly last start, the victory was only narrow however quite worthy as I’m not convinced he handled the surface. GALIFIANAKIS draws well, gets the claim & rarely puts in a bad run, definite winning chance. COUP DE TONNERRE favourite? No thanks however he can place. Numbers: 10 – 1 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet: Wide exotics… if you must RACE 6 RAINBOW CONNECTION was sent out an odds-on favourite first up at Eagle Farm & on face value looked disappointing. The sectional times of the race told the tale with the leaders sprinting home in a super slick sectional which gave those off speed no hope of running them down. His effort to finish in the placings was a good one in the end & the step up to 1200m tomorrow with a more genuine pace suggests he can bounce back. SIMBU should find this easier than last start, he takes on 1200m for the first time which he may now be looking for. BUBBA’S BAY is lightly raced building a good record, worth noting he did have everything to suit last start. Numbers: 6 – 7 – 10 – 14 Suggested Bet: RAINBOW CONNECTION TO WIN RACE 7 Just the two winning chances in my opinion this race being the resuming ALL THAT PIZZAZZ & the race fit & very much in form HATCHET. I’m a big fan of the latter however I’m just a little concerned he’ll get buried away on the fence & note he is dropping back in trip having hit the line strongly over 1200m his past 3 starts. That leans me to ALL THAT PIZZAZZ who just looks to get the box seat run behind the leaders & he is effective fresh. As for the rest, RED RUBI will be running on strongly however gives a start. Numbers: 6 – 10 – 11 – 1 Suggested Bet: ALL THAT PIZZAZZ & HATCHET TO WIN RACE 8 BONAPARTE was a big odds winner first up here 4 weeks ago & I can’t see any reason as to why he won’t prove hard to beat once again. He was nice & strong late at the end of 1200m, his record over the longer trip is a good one, he draws favourably & although yet to win second up some of his beaten efforts are good enough to win this. IRISH SONGS has the class factor & the claim is a big help, he won’t be far away however just feel as though he may need this? AL AABIR raced very well last prep missing a place only once & that was in the two-mile Brisbane Cup, he’s drawn poorly however far from hopeless. Numbers: 2 – 1 – 4 – 8 Suggested Bet: BONAPARTE EACH-WAY RACE 9 As with Race 7 just the two winning chances in my opinion being OUR MAGNUS & SHA OF GOMER. My leaning is to the former who caught the eye running on late fresh behind a smart type in Zarastro, he should gain a perfect run from the good alley & stepping up in distance is a definite positive. SHA OF GOMER couldn’t possibly win first up the way the race was run, his sectionals were still very respectable & he has raced well against stronger company, he’ll give a start, look out late! Maybe AZZAREACH next best, not far away last couple in decent grade. Numbers: 10 – 18 – 6 – 11 Suggested Bet: OUR MAGNUS & SHA OF GOMER TO WIN Market Market
