Chris Nelson’s Saturday Randwick Preview

RACE 1

Outstanding day of racing to look forward to at Randwick highlighted by the appearance of Autumn Glow in Race 8. Warm day ahead with a top near 30 degrees, a perfect surface awaits.  We get things underway with a 1000m Highway, more questions than answers unfortunately, market moves will be the best guide. (1) OH ARTHUR is very promising however has to lump 62kg, he did carry 59kg two back if that helps. (2) BENGAL fitter third up was good last start, can he replicate? (3) IMPENDOR races well fresh, trials though? (5) BRAVE XENA failed in stronger races before spelling, better in the wet? No trial? (10) CRUIZINGTHESTARS beaten only once resumes off a good trial win to the eye however the opposition were very average. Now you get where I’m coming from…

Numbers: 5 – 1 – 2 – 10

Suggested Bet: box up as many as possible in exotics.

RACE 2

Does the Midway look any easier than the Highway? Well, if the same (2) BARRENGARRY turns up as the one who did here when resuming a fortnight back then yes, it does. Zooming down the outside coming clear late he’s going to lap up the additional 200m this afternoon & I don’t see many, if any challengers amongst his opposition. (11) ALL STAR may be the best of them, winner 3 of his past 5 & recent defeats were sound.

Numbers: 2 – 11 – 8 – 6

Suggested Bet: BARRENGARRY TO WIN.

RACE 3

Have to be with the second-up (1) DECLICHY BOULEVARD who was game in defeat when resuming at Goulburn in their Cup which was a strong race. The rise in trip suits & anywhere near her best would have these covered. (2) ROCK EMPIRE is quite consistent, a winner here this trip two runs back before out of luck at Murwillumbah where things didn’t pan out. (4) COLD BREW could bounce back without surprising.

Numbers: 1 – 2 – 4 – 7

Suggested Bet:  DECLICHY BOULEVARD TO WIN (small bet).

RACE 4

(5) SOVERATO comes out of this race & heads to the Gold Coast where she should prove hard to beat. Tough race, (11) FUNDAMENTAL NATURE sets up well, in form, no weight & a good gate, shows plenty of promise, wouldn’t be taking anything under $4 though & she’s an each-way play only. (17) NIGHT AGENT hit the line strongly first up & should appreciate the rise in trip, J. Mac sticks which is a good pointer, barrier looks a little sticky however he’s the man you want to offset that. Chances to 4, 6, 7 & 9, seriously I could have still missed the winner!

Numbers: 11 – 17 – 4 – 7

Suggested Bet:  Box up as many as possible in exotics.

RACE 5

Group 3 Bill Ritchie is a cracking race, very competitive. Can (1) HEADLEY GRANGE carry his big weight of 61kg to victory? Without doubt he’s the horse in the race with the best form however giving away 7 & 8kg to the likes of (8) SIXTIES & the very much in form (9) ALTHOFF is no easy task, add to that list the very promising (15) MR MILLER. I’ll lean to (9) ALTHOFF who is rock hard fit & absolutely flying this prep. He defied the pattern of the day winning at Rosehill last start rounding up his rivals from the back, simply too good & too classy, surely runs well here with the light weight. Had (8) SIXTIES had two trials I’d be with him, fear he might run out of puff late. This race will be a very good guide going forward.

Numbers: 9 – 1 – 8 – 15

Suggested Bet: ALTHOFF EACH-WAY (small bet).

RACE 6

Going for value in the Group 2 Kingston Town putting (14) PIGGYBACK on top. Strong to the line both runs this time in she really did catch the eye very late her in the leisurely run Chelmsford here a fortnight back. This is an easier race; she’ll lap up the additional 400m & is well worth an each-way punt. (1) GREEN SPACES should be getting close now, also went around in the Chelmsford when closer in the run, he lacked dash when the leader sprinted however was raising another effort late, the concern is the wide gate & the likely big start he gives away. Wouldn’t be surprised to see (3) SOUL OF SPAIN improve sharply.

Numbers: 14 – 1 – 3 – 8

Suggested Bet: PIGGYBACK EACH-WAY (small bet).

RACE 7

The Group 2 Tea Rose over the 1400m. Ex-Perth filly (3) STRIKING ALIBI impressed at the trials before resuming here a fortnight ago in the 1200m Furious when flashing home late. She’s in the top yard, gets the top jockey & although yet to be tried beyond that trip the way she finished off you’d have to think 1400m is just perfect for her. (1) BANGKOK HOTTIE was very strong to the line two back before ridden closer & prevailing in the Furious, she looks a bombproof filly, hard not to see her in the finish once again. (6) GLOBAL GOAL hasn’t raced since the placing behind Pembrey first up when closing along the rail from last, has trialled since though & won that nicely. No knock (2) CHILLY GIRL.

Numbers: 3 – 1 – 6 – 2

Suggested Bet: STRIKING ALIBI TO WIN.

RACE 8

The Group 2 Seven Stakes sees (4) AUTUMN GLOW shooting for her 13th win from 14 outings; I doubt you’ll find anyone tipping against her & I’m certainly not. Cracking return in the Winx accounting for Sheza Alibi who made a mess of her rivals in the Group 1 at Flemington last Saturday. Ticks every single box that I can see however at the cramped odds it’s more about who runs the placings! (3) LINDERMANN heads south to run at Caulfield in the Underwood, (7) LADY SHENANDOAH same venue in the Sir Rupert Clarke. (2) GRINGOTTS the quinella hope imo.

Numbers: 4 – 2 – 1 – 5

Suggested Bet: AUTUMN GLOW to win, box up 1, 2, 5 to place.

RACE 9

The Group 2 The Shorts is an absolute belter of a race; many Everest hopefuls are set to go around furthering their claims in the big race which is only 4 weeks away. (3) HEADWALL was a cracking first up run in the Concorde behind Tempted, the mare had the unimpeded run down the outside whilst this one went for the gaps & got through most but not all, clear late he wound up again & flew home. With clearer running he could well have made a real race of it. Although I’ve got (1) NINJA in my top 10 Everest rankings I’m starting to think I may have underestimated him a little, his recent trial was that of a very good horse going to the line under a very strong grip. Let’s see how he goes here. Can never leave out the super mare (2) JOLIESTAR who has won 5 of 8 first up runs, she’s a star. (6) SPICY MARTINI a big watch at this level, Stradbroke winner who really caught my eye winning her latest trial.

Numbers: 3 – 1 – 2 – 6

Suggested Bet: HEADWALL TO WIN/Saver NINJA.

RACE 10

Big numbers in the last with 6 emergencies, max of 14 to run. Could go any number of different ways, many of the main chances either resume or come off freshen ups, market leads will be all important. (2) GOLDEN STRAAND has a good fresh record & has gone to the line in his two lead-up trials with gas in the tank, he’ll park behind a hot speed here from gate 1 & should he get a clear crack in the straight will be very hard to hold out. His fresh win last prep was excellent sitting wide & pulling clear late. (17) AMAZING EAGLE struggles to win however he’s always thereabouts, maps well & no weight, he’s a chance. Can make cases for 4, 5, 7 & 13 also.

Numbers: 2 – 17 – 7 – 4

Suggested Bet: GOLDEN STRAAND EACH-WAY.
