Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on February 23, 2024February 23, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Happy to have something each-way on the Toowoomba trained mare SIGOURNEY in this opening race. She’s always running on & gets to 2020m this afternoon which is as far as she’s been in her career, based on recent efforts she should run it out well & she looks a good each-way play. ARTFUL GIRL didn’t handle Eagle Farm two back, nothing wrong with her efforts this track though & although up a couple of kilos in weight this suits as she is down in grade. BACK DA MAN in the mix as well. Numbers: 9 – 7 – 10 – 4 Suggested Bet: SIGOURNEY EACH-WAY RACE 2 NOTACLUEHOWORWHO burnt me last start here when just out of the placings as favourite in what was an open race. Just felt he got too far back & against the fence he was always going to run into a dead end which was the case before finishing on nicely late. I like him out to the longer trip & drawn out he’ll get a clear go at them this time around. FIRE LOVE sat wide in the run here last start & fought on well, include. AMERICAN PHIREBALL may be chasing further now, still in the place mix though. Numbers: 3 – 11 – 2 – 1 Suggested Bet: NOTACLUEHOWORWHO TO WIN. RACE 3 Our leading trainer Tony Gollan has 4 runners in this field as I type being nos.3, 4, 10 & 13. Gut feel is that SACRED FEELING is potentially the best of them however she’s been handed no favours today with the wide gate. She may be good enough to overcome that though & if not a big market drifter I’ll lean her way over the last start winning stablemate SNOW BOUM. I’m not sure where AFRICAN DAISY ends up in the run however she’s had too many chances for mine & her strike rate shows that. Numbers: 10 – 13 – 3 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 4 We have 3 Jewel Qualifier races today (finals run at the Gold Coast in a fortnight) & this is the first of them. Plenty of debutantes taking on the experienced runners suggesting market moves will be a good guide. First starter BRAZEN ACT looked good winning a recent trial here & draws well, happy to follow market support. DEFIANT BOOM has race experience & was under a good hold in his trial. ALL INCLUSIVE is nicely bred, trial winner. Numbers: 9 – 2 – 8 – 12 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 5 Don’t see a lot of depth to this fillies Jewel Prelude. The unraced runners down the bottom have trialled well enough to suggest they are definite winning chances on debut. I’ll just lean to the race experienced MISHANI CROWN who did have every chance in front last start however drops back 90m & this track layout should be more to her liking. Good gate for the first starter TIYE who is in the right yard. Drawn next door RED FEATHER BOA’s trial was also solid enough. Numbers: 1 – 12 – 10 – 3 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 6 BOOM TORQUE gets the nod here however I can’t say I’d be launching into a short price personally. Things didn’t pan out for him here last start drawing a wide gate & having to either go forward or back, the decision was made to go forward & he just didn’t have the same finish. Back in grade with a quieter ride he will prove hard to beat. VIMINELE is racing very well, probably stiff two back he made up for that winning his latest with a strong finish, look for similar here. The consistent BETTCHA THE CROWN leads & will figure in the finish. Numbers: 2 – 7 – 9 – 3 Suggested Bet: BOOM TORQUE TO WIN ($2.50 or better)/Saver VIMINELE RACE 7 The consistent HELEVA DEEL gets the nod here on an each-way basis. Liked the run first up where she should have finished a little closer over 1400m. The rise to 1615m today is ideal & have no fear about the 3-week break between runs as she’s ticked that box successfully in the past. The consistent REDWOOD SHADOW keeps running good races without winning, likely looking for further now however can’t be overlooked from a good draw with Maloney to pilot. GRANITE PRINCE will race forward, he’d like a decent downpour, which would help his chances. Numbers: 5 – 10 – 9 – 1 Suggested Bet: HELEVA DEEL EACH-WAY. RACE 8 Well, you’re either with GOLDEN BOOM or you’re not here! He’s always had big wraps on him & there’s no doubt he has good ability. He disappointed on face value at the Sunshine Coast however that was an oppressively humid day where many horses cracked under the conditions. He’s been back to the trials & won well in slick time, today he lands a good gate & carries no weight, no excuses today! LEGAL ESPRIT continues to race well, claim & the soft draw both plusses, back to 1200m won’t hurt either. CONTEMPTUOUS was one of my favourites, he hasn’t quite gone on with it of late however from a good draw today will get his chance. Numbers: 10 – 2 – 4 – 9 Suggested Bet: GOLDEN BOOM TO WIN (black figures). RACE 9 The 3yo Jewel Prelude is an absolute raffle! Big field with plenty of the major hopes coming up with wide/awkward gates. I’ve landed on HIGHBAR who impressed winning at the Sunshine Coast after being beaten first up at Eagle Farm. That was his first outing away from the Sunshine Coast where he is unbeaten, yes, he needs to get the job done away from there & can do so today. DEFIANT SPIRIT draws poorly, also has strong form lines though. Numbers: 4 – 2 – 11 – 7 Suggested Bet: HIGHBAR EACH-WAY. RACE 10 DAYTONA BAY got the job done in the final race at Eagle Farm 3 weeks back & he can send us all home winners once again this afternoon. Emperor loomed up to go past however couldn’t with this one kicking strongly to move clear in the run to the line. There wasn’t much pace about that day & on paper the scenario looks similar in this race, will Jimmy Orman push on again from the wide gate, big chance! SHOPPING ESPRIT is very close, drops in weight & will be at peak fitness. THE ELANORA flashed home last start just missing out, can he do it again? Numbers: 3 – 8 – 10 – 4 Suggested Bet: DAYTONA BAY TO WIN. Market Market
