Sir Delius is Spring loaded and ready to fire Posted on September 18, 2025September 18, 2025 | Posted by TABtouch The Spring Carnival is heating up, and one of its most exciting contenders, Sir Delius, is ready to take the next step in his campaign this Saturday in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Sir Delius made a strong impression first-up in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick, finishing a close second to Lindermann. The run wasn’t without controversy though. Stewards questioned stablemate Vauban’s jockey Adam Hyeronimus about his decision to allow Sir Delius to take a more favourable position during the race. Despite the post-race scrutiny, Sir Delius’s performance spoke volumes. He surged late, nearly catching Lindermann at the line, and confirmed his status as a genuine Spring contender. Sir Delius now heads to the 1800m Underwood Stakes, a key weight-for-age contest that often serves as a stepping stone to the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. With Craig Williams booked to ride, the stable is confident Sir Delius will relish the Caulfield conditions and continue his upward trajectory. The Underwood field is stacked with quality, including last year’s winner Buckaroo, emerging talent Moira, and proven Group performers like Smokin’ Romans and Middle Earth. But Sir Delius, already touted as a Melbourne Cup favourite, will be one of the most closely watched runners. While the Melbourne Cup remains the ultimate goal, Sir Delius’s connections have hinted at a possible Cox Plate tilt following his Chelmsford performance. His ability to accelerate off a strong tempo and handle varying conditions makes him a versatile threat across multiple distances. Saturday’s Underwood Stakes will serve as a key form guide. A strong showing could see Sir Delius head to Moonee Valley for the Cox Plate before tackling the 3200m Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Sir Delius’s Spring campaign is shaping up as one of the most compelling stories of the season. With a strong Chelmsford run under his belt and the Underwood Stakes looming, fans and punters alike will be watching closely as he builds toward a potential shot at racing immortality in the Melbourne Cup. Stay tuned for updates as Sir Delius continues his journey through the Spring Carnival. Market Market
