Scott Embry’s Wednesday Northam Preview Posted on June 24, 2025June 24, 2025 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 MIDNIGHT STAR only had one trial leading into her debut when getting back in the field before finding plenty of traffic late behind Savage Dancer. All things considered did a great job to finish within 1.5L of the winner and she should relish the step out to 1600m. These mile maidens are thin and she looks a handy filly. ANNIE WARBUCKS put in two blinders from the back of the field before being sent out a short priced favourite last start (heavily supported in betting) but was only grinding late. COUSIN MORTIMER was $15 into $4.60 last Wednesday but conditions conspired against him. PERFECT RULER rolls to the top again. Numbers: 10 – 6 – 1 – 2 Suggested Bet – MIDNIGHT STAR WIN RACE 2 THE ROCKET trialled really nicely for a horse who will make his debut from a powerful juvenile yard, a favourable barrier and at an eachway price. You don’t see many 400m jump out winners settle ‘midfield’ in the first furlong and then extend away from them late and in his 1000m trial he was making ground late off a Saturday winner in Monte Tremezzo. TWISTED STEEL is the one that the market likely comes for. Looks a professional, jump run type with Pike aboard. Obvious respect. AWESOME FORCE hit the line strongly on debut in a Saturday race. QUEEN SELYSE improved sharply ridden with a sit. Numbers: 7 – 8 – 3 – 9 Suggested Bet – THE ROCKET EACHWAY RACE 3 DIAMONDS’N’RUBIES trialled well alongside Scenic George leading into her return to racing and went around a warm $2.30 favourite. She missed away and when reviewing the rest of the meeting she probably also tried to make her run in the inferior part of the track. Happy to follow through with her and give her another go second-up. PETER GUNN makes his debut on the back of two solid trials. Finished within 2L of Saturday winning stablemate Nonesospicy and then was doing his best late over 1000 in his second trial. SILENT AMARDA looked sharper in his most recent trial but may still want further. ENCHANTED STAR took no part on debut and has trialled again since. Numbers: 7 – 5 – 2 – 16 Suggested Bet – DIAMONDS’N’RUBIES WIN RACE 4 ART SESSION ran second to Repossession first-up, won a 3 year old 0MWLY second-up and then finished third behind Repossession third-up in another 3 year old Saturday. This is outstanding placement back into a C1 and after the claim for ZJP (who only requires 3 more winners to ride on a Saturday) he looks extremely well suited. The Repossession form is being franked left, right and centre. RIVER ANGEL got the job done first-up but had to work for it. FAVOURITE SONGS should work through the grades this prep. SKYTALKER is set a serious task with 61kg from barrier 12/13. Numbers: 1 – 7 – 4 – 2 Suggested Bet – ART SESSION WIN RACE 5 MAJOR MARIO is an honest customer who is rarely far from the winner. Think that he ran into a progressive 3 year old last start in Our Paladin Al and expect that the form through that race will hold up. Troy Turner jumps off Sheeza Sheila to stick with him and from the draw he should be right place, right time. KING MAHUTA is also through that race and loomed the winner at one point before peaking on his run. TRUE PLAYER looked a little one paced at his return and might be wanting 2000+ quickly. NICKELPLAY was given every chance last week and was only fair late. Numbers: 5 – 4 – 3 – 11 Suggested Bet – MAJOR MARIO EACHWAY RACE 6 LET’S TALK is another wonderful example of the use of a 3kg claimer. Winner of a 0MWLY first-up, winner of a Westspeed Platinum second-up, beaten only 2L in a 66+ third-up and then most recent finished less than a head behind Prospector’s Pick and subsequent winner En Plein Air. Back into a C3 with only 58kg after the claim and a horse who can be ridden for speed. Great race for him. SANTANOVA covered plenty of ground late and was only zapped late by an enigmatic but talented type. Enjoys every favour. MILLSTEEE and ISHKUR are two horses at double figures who can surprise a few of these. Numbers: 3 – 9 – 11 – 8 Suggested Bet – LET’S TALK WIN RACE 7 PLATINUM SHOT and CLIMB ON TOP come through the same race behind Cross Statement at Northam. PLATINUM SHOT got right down the grandstand side of the track in the final stages and while running past CLIMB ON TOP in the process it’s easy to sell yourself that there was nothing between them due to the outside being better going. EXCELTRAIN has been competitive in 60+, 66+ and 72+ races across his career. Has a big weight but should be an ideal apprentice’s horse in theory. HAFEY is going lengths better than it looks. Numbers: 3 – 5 – 1 – 7 Suggested Bet – CLIMB ON TOP EACHWAY Market Market
