Deane’s Saturday Mornington Best Bets Posted on March 24, 2017 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Preview RACE 3 NO. 4 TRY FOUR TRY FOUR has been steadily running into form and looks a great winning chance when he contests the Benchmark 90 Handicap (2000m). The Darren Weir trained gelding didn’t have much luck when finishing 4th behind ALOFT over 1800 metres at Flemington on March 11. He will relish a step up in distance, looks drawn for a good run and gets the benefit of Ben Allen’s 1.5kg claim. He’s ready to strike winning form and this looks a great race for him to record his 12th career win. RACE 4 NO. 2 TOGA PICTA TOGA PICTA is a good prospect from the John O’Shea stable that looks placed to advantage when he contests the Mornington Sires (1500m). The son of Street Cry did a good job to win on debut over 1300 metres at Wyong before a solid 4th behind SIRRCONI in the VRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 11. He will be better for that experience and looks drawn for a good run from barrier four. He’s a progressive horse that should prove hard to beat. SuperPick - RACE 4 NO. 2 TOGA PICTA - Money Back – Run 2nd RACE 7 NO. 3 THE GOLD TRAIL The winner of the Mornington Cup (2400m) is guaranteed a place in the Caulfield Cup field in October and international stayer THE GOLD TRAIL is on a hit and run mission to win this race and get the golden ticket into the Caulfield Cup. The Charlie Appleby stable had a stellar spring in Melbourne winning four of the feature staying races and proved a dominant force in the staying ranks. THE GOLD TRAIL comes off a strong win over 2400 metres in Dubai on January 26 and looks the ideal type for this race. He has good tactical speed and looks very genuine when placed under pressure. Craig Williams takes the mount and THE GOLD TRAIL appeals as one of the better bets of the day. Bet Now
