Deane’s Flemington Sunday Selections Posted on September 30, 2016October 3, 2016 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Preview RACE 3 NO. 1 THROSSELL Promising stayer THROSSELL can stakes his claim for this month’s Victoria Derby (2500m) with a win in the UCI Stakes (1800m). The Ciaron Maher trained galloper has been placed at both runs this campaign including a solid third behind DETECTIVE over 1400 metres at Flemington on September 10. He should be close to peak fitness and gives every impression that the extra distance of this race is in his favour. He is drawn for a sweet run, appears to enjoy racing on the spacious Flemington circuit and looks one of the better bets of the day. RACE 5 NO. 1 ALMOONQITH The value runner of the day is ALMOONQITH when he runs in the Bart Cummings (2500m). The Hayes/ Dabernig trained import should be nearing peak fitness with two runs under his belt and gets to a distance at which he is highly competitive. Last year, he won the Sandown Cup (3200m) and was placed in the Geelong Cup (2400m), but many of his runs have been thwarted by wide barrier draws or rain affected tracks. The racing gods have shined upon him with a favourable draw which should allow Michael Walker to put ALMOONQITH into a winning position and run well at nice odds. RACE 9 NO. 11 ULMANN ULMANN has enjoyed a fruitful campaign and looks a great winning chance again when he contests the Paris Lane Handicap (1400m). The Darren Weir trained gelding scored consecutive wins over 1400 metres at Caulfield and Flemington earlier in his preparation before running well at his past two outings including a solid last start second behind subsequent group one winner BON AURUM over 1400 metres at Flemington on September 10. That form is the right reference for this standard of race of ULMANN only needs to maintain his consistent level of form to prove hard to beat again.
