Deane Lester’s Preview

RACE 1 NO. 2 PURE PRIDE

Highly promising mare PURE PRIDE resumes from a spell when she contests the Asian Executive Stakes (1400m) and it looks the ideal race for her to kick off her campaign as a winner. The four year old performed very well at stakes level during spring, firstly with her luckless second behind FRENCH EMOTION in the Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on October 2 before a close-up 5th behind I AM A STAR in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 29. She is on a path to stronger mares race during the autumn carnival but looks to have a class edge on this field and appeals as one of the better bets of the day.

RACE 5 NO. 1 LEGLESS VEUVE

Quality filly LEGLESS VEUVE returned to racing as a winner when she won the Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 4 and looks the one to beat again when she contests the Vanity (1400m). The Stuart Webb trained filly has good tactical speed and the extra distance of this race is in her favour. She will be fitter for that last run and looks ideally placed to record her fourth win from just seven starts.

RACE 7 NO. 6 CROCODILE ROCK

CROCODILE ROCK is an exciting staying prospect from the Rob Hickmott stable that represents the best bet of the day when he contests the Ascot Racecourse Trophy (2000m). The import has only had three starts in Australia for two wins and a luckless second from three outings. At his last start, he carried a big weight and recorded fast time under a light ride from Ben Melham to record an arrogant win over 2400 metres at Sandown on January 18. Whilst he is dropping back in distance, he drops 4kg on that run and has far more upside than his rivals. He is shaping as though he will win high quality staying races into the future and this is a lovely stepping stone; should be winning again.
