Flemington 16 January – Thoroughbred Preview

Deane Lester’s Preview

RACE 2 NO. 8 BOUNDARY

BOUNDARY looks a good hope at odds when she contests the owner.racing.com Handicap (1400m). The four year old scored a brave win with 60kg over 1400 metres at Geelong on December 16 before a luckless 6th behind HARBOUR GREY over 1400 metres at Flemington on January 1. She nearly fell at the start which put her out of position, so her late finishing effort was full of merit. She should race closer to the lead this time and Craig Williams takes the ride. She won over this track and distance at this time last year and appears ready to peak with four runs under her belt.

RACE 4 NO.5 LUCQUES

LUCQUES is making good progress as a stayer and looks a genuine winning chance when he contests the Rain Lover Handicap (2500m). The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained gelding ran very well when finishing 4th behind MUJADALE in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on January 1. He was jumping up sharply in distance on that occasion so the run was full of merit and he will be more seasoned for that run. It looks a similar style of race and, with added fitness from his last run, LUCQUES is poised to run another bold race.

RACE 6 NO.4 HELLBENT

Talented colt HELLBENT looks the standout bet of the day when he contests in the inaugural running of the Inglis Dash (1100m). The Kurt Goldman trained galloper has the benefit of straight track experience from when he finished 8th behind JAPONSYME in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31. He next run when finishing 2nd over 1100 metres at Randwick on December 12 was full of merit and a subsequent trial win when wearing blinkers at Rosehill on January 4 was quite outstanding. Whilst this race has attracted a big field, it looks thin for winning chances and HELLBENT appeals as the best bet of the day.
