Deane Lester’s Sandown Best Bets

RACE 1 NO.3 ARTORIUS

ARTORIUS looks a smart type from the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable that appeals as a strong winning chance when he contests the 2YO Handicap (1300m). The son of Flying Artie made a promising debut when running a fast finishing second behind the highly regarded JIGSAW over 1135 metres at Geelong on January 7. He showed his inexperience in the early part of that race but showed his natural talent by running some of the best sectionals of the meeting over the final stages of that race. He will be improved by that experience, will relish a step up in distance on the spacious Sandown Hillside circuit and gets the services of elite rider Mark Zahra. He looks a terrific chance of starting Sandown punters on a winning note.

RACE 7 NO.5 GRINZINGER ALLEE

GRINZINGER ALLEE is an emerging talent since joining the Danny O’Brien stable and looks the one to beat when he runs in the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1500m). After some very good trials leading into his first-up run, the four year old ran a luckless 2nd behind RULE THE WORLD over 1400 metres at Caulfield on January 2. He meets RULE THE WORLD 3kg better for that narrow defeat, should appreciate stepping up in distance and gets the services of leading rider Jamie Kah. He looks destined to progress through the grades this campaign so GRINZINGER ALLEE represents the best bet of the day.

RACE 8 NO.12 TRANSLATOR

TRANSLATOR will be fitter for one run back from a spell and looks a good value chance at each way odds when he contests the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1500m). The four year old resumed with an even effort to finish 8th behind the in-form INDISPENSABLE over 1400 metres at Sandown on January 6. A lot of his rivals come through that race but he’s the horse open to the most improvement with added fitness and blinkers being reapplied, a step up in distance and getting onto the more spacious Sandown Hillside circuit. Last campaign, he defeated the stakes placed LA BELLE JUDE at Geelong before finishing 3rd behind the talented RIGHT YOU ARE over 1600 metres at Caulfield in May last year. That form is highly competitive for this race and TRANSLATOR looks primed to produce a big run at juicy odds.
