Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on August 31, 2018 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 1 NO.3 JAAMEH Imported stayer JAMMEH is progressing well towards the better staying races this spring and should continue on his winning way when he runs in the Open Handicap (2400m). The Hayes/ Dabernig trained gelding was a dominant winner over 2510 metres at Flemington on August 11 and looked open to further fitness improvement on that occasion. This looks an ideal race to boost his credentials into a better race in the coming weeks as few of his rivals possess any recent winning form and JAAMEH appeals as the standout bet of the day. RACE 4 NO.12 MURAAQEB The best value runner of the day might be MURAAQEB when he contests the Open Handicap (1400m). The four year old will be fitter for his first-up 6th behind OSBORNE BULLS in the Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 18 in which he was unsuited by a very slow pace that developed into a sharp 400 metres sprint. He will relish stepping up in distance, looks drawn for a great run and gets the services of Adelaide’s premier rider Jamie Kah. He’s a stakes winner last preparation that looks well weighted here and appears primed for a strong run at good odds with the favourite NIGHT’S WATCH looking the logical danger; it might be a good quinella also. RACE 7 NO.1 HAPPY CLAPPER The feature race of the day is the $1 million Memsie Stakes (1400m) which is the first Group one race of the Australian racing season and it sees the return to racing of one of the established stars of Australian racing in HAPPY CLAPPER who is an evergreen campaigner that looks set for another fruitful campaign. The eight year old is a multiple group one winner that also has multiple feature race placings behind WINX, which is the best form in this country. He has trialled well for this race and, whilst last year’s winner VEGA MAGIC and KEMANTARI will provide strong opposition, HAPPY CLAPPER can record his 12th career victory. Market Market
