Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on July 16, 2026July 16, 2026 | Posted by Chris Nelson Race 1 We race at Doomben in Brisbane on Saturday with a very questionable weather forecast. Officially there’s not a great deal of rain on the way however that’s not the opinion of all the experts, the one given is that it will be extremely windy! Keen on the chances of the lightly raced filly (12) CASCADING in this opening race, she debuted with a game run at the Gold Coast behind the highly rated Toorak Jewel when wide throughout. Spelled she then trialled well before resuming with a strong finishing burst on her home track on Caloundra Cup Day. Additional 200m today, drawn the pole, looks very well placed. (2) FEARLESS WIN & (1) TENGUN TOMMY come out of the same race both beating her home, they are the clear dangers. Numbers: 12 – 2 – 1 – 8 Suggested Bet: CASCADING EACH-WAY. RACE 2 (10) CRUSADER VOYAGE should be a decent price here & I’m quite happy to have something on him each-way. Won against the odds first start for the new yard before luckless last Sunday when held up in the straight, yes this is tougher however I like the booking of leading jockey Ben Thompson, very positive. (6) MOONAN QUARTZ is flying having won both outings this prep, give in the track a definite plus as is the claim. (1) MIRRA IMPACT draws well & will race up on speed. Numbers: 10 – 6 – 1 – 5 Suggested Bet: CRUSADER VOYAGE EACH-WAY. Race 3 Should (5) FIRE BOMBER handle the 7-day back up he looks tough to beat here. Narrowly beaten by Navy Pilot last Saturday that one would be a short-priced favourite in this line-up. Don’t mind the drop back to 1200m & drawn to get plenty of favours. No knock on the flying (2) MOSHULU SPIRIT who is 3 from 3 this prep & 3 from 4 overall, just has to deal with a hefty weight rise. Don’t overlook (8) VENOM RUSH who is capable of a big finish, found the 1350m too far last start, big win at this trip the run prior. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 8 – 1 Suggested Bet: FIRE BOMBER EACH-WAY/Box up top 3 selections in exotics. Race 4 The always difficult distance race this week sees (2) CORMAC T the ruling favourite courtesy of his reasonably consistent southern form. I’ve gone way out wide & put the first up (4) ENTERPRISE PRIVATE on top who yes, goes around fresh over 2020m! His last two first up performances suggest that’s the way he races best & unless he’s a big drifter close to race time I’ll stick. (12) SAN GABRIEL draws out however could be an improver. Numbers: 4 – 2 – 12 – 7 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. Race 5 Topweight (1) SWORD OF LEGACY has accepted both here & at Rosehill, as I type she’s still engaged at both venues & is a definite winning chance wherever she turns up. A last start winner should it be here I’d suggest she can make it two straight. If not, I’ll lean to (2) DRAGONNE ROUGE who didn’t fire a shot last prep however at her initial campaign she won her first 3 starts. Encouraging first up effort & any rain around will be a bonus. (5) SPIRIT OF BARTY has shown glimpses of good ability, worth including in exotics. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 5 – 6 Suggested Bet: SWORD OF LEGACY WIN/DRAGONNE ROUGE EACH-WAY. Race 6 Keen on the chances of the much maligned (1) JOHN RAMBO who looks to have found a very suitable race. Beaten 2 lengths at his two outings this prep they have been in much stronger races & even though he lumps the big weight today he should score a very economical run from the good draw & with a gap in the straight look out! (3) NORTH POLE took zero part in the race at the Sunshine Coast making a complete mess of the start, he can improve sharply. (10) ROBRICK a chance should he repeat the last start effort. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 10 – 5 Suggested Bet: JOHN RAMBO TO WIN. Race 7 Going a little wide here putting (5) SHE’S EXOTIC on top. I like her dropping back in grade here having contested mostly stronger races over the carnival & although not figuring in the finish she was far from disappointing. Down in weight, class, well drawn & any give in the track is a bonus. (3) BEAUX RUMBLE won at the Gold Coast, it was a race he should have won though, he’s an on-paced runner drawn the pole. (1) TALTARNI FIELDS has also drawn favourably & can improve second-up. Numbers: 5 – 3 – 1 – 10 Suggested Bet: SHE’S EXOTIC EACH-WAY. Race 8 Interesting race as we have no leader whatsoever, perhaps it will be The Inflictor? I’m hoping (5) WARBY can find a spot close enough to unleash his powerful finish in the straight. Not the easiest to catch he handles all types of going & comes off a couple of sound efforts in Listed races his past couple. (1) THE INFLICTOR should he end up leading might get it very soft & shouldn’t be overlooked. Chances don’t end there in a tricky looking affair. Numbers: 5 – 1 – 6 – 3 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. Race 9 We wind up the day with a Class 6 where the in-form (4) DAGGERS takes on a mile for the first time. Can’t say he screams as though he’s looking for it & at the short quote on offer early I have to pass. (9) NAVAL TRADER is another unproven at this distance, this will be his first try however I did like the way he hit the line at his latest, he may actually be looking for it. (12) POCKETMONEY ran well last start, jock won’t take any of the 2kg claim however wouldn’t be leaving out. Numbers: 9 – 4 – 12 – 5 Suggested Bet: NAVAL TRADER EACH-WAY (small bet). Market Market
