Scott Embry’s Sunday Kalgoorlie Preview

RACE 1

VIVALDA hasn’t had much luck at all since arriving in Kalgoorlie with MR Peter Fernie. First-up ran second to Dance Version, second-up worked too hard, third-up ended up rearwards on a day where it was nearly physically impossible to win from off speed. On a more even surface she’s got the ability to turn the tables on her stablemate SOVEREIGN CRUST who nearly pinched it last start. Was right place right time on a leader bias pad but still kept fighting right to the finish. ENERGETIC will find this lengths easier than running into horses like Vampi Queen and Olaf The Snowman in recent runs in Perth. Seems to go better the colder he’s ridden. PEANUT BUTTER is going along alright, but seems to travel better than he lets down.

RACE 2

BILLY THE BOSS nearly got his maiden out of the way last start. Lord Momo got him right on the post, and while yes, he was in the best part of the track hard up against the fence, he had still shown enough in previous runs since arriving in Kal to suggest that he’s the one to beat here off a similar run in transit. PRINCE OF BONDI just continues to run placings without being able to get the job done. He’s now 0/16 at Kalgoorlie with 7 minors to his name, including his last two where he’s nearly loomed the winner until he’s spotted the winning post. Hard to trust. PEMBETON showed something early as a juvenile but has really disappointed since. They’ve tried him over ground and he doesn’t stay so off a month’s freshen he’s back in trip and off to a country maiden. BATISTA won a maiden earlier in the season before being DQ’d. Had minor excuses last start but still went unders.

RACE 3

ROYAL GUARDIAN was stiff last start in a 58+. She was on a freshen-up out of the Belmont Classic and charged to the line for Holly Nottle. With her suspension Chris Parnham has been booked to take over and she drops from a 58+ into a C2. Draws well and should be hard to hold out late. She’s fairly lightly raced and seems to be still improving with racing. Looks a nice set up for her to score. SAINTY CULLITY has been going really well since breaking his maiden and hasn’t raced with much luck in recent outings either, finding traffic and then still hitting the line. GOLD ENIMGA won this track/distance/grade two back when growing wings late to score. LANTA is trying really hard and should be able to get across from the wide draw.

RACE 4

BLOOD BROTHER won a maiden and then a C2 in back to back outings earlier this season before heading into the deep end in the Listed Aquanita Stakes for 3 year olds at Belmont Park. 78 days between runs, Listed company back to C2 company. Has a bit of X-Factor about him and in an open and even race, going to gamble on him being ready to go. MIDNIGHT STAR won a maiden and a C1 in the metro/provincial area for Michael Grantham and now finds herself on the Goldfields. Should be a nice acquisition for new connections. COULDABEENAHANDBAG is 1 from 27 so it’s hard to really get too enthused but she’s finished in the money at four of her last five and is giving 110%. OFFSHORE won extremely impressively 28 days ago.

RACE 5 – Best Bet

DON’T WAIT FOR LUCK is a ripper and in my opinion a genuine chance of keeping the Hannans Handicap trophy in Kalgoorlie this year without that many Perth horses touted to make the trip to the Goldfields. His win in the Goldrush under 60kg was nothing short of arrogant and he only rises half a kilo start to start. Seems to go best fresh and has the versatility to hold a spot. Flying. CLOSE AT HAND looks to be building towards a Hannans tilt and like the fact a senior rider goes on here. SCIENCE DEGREE has run second in the Goldfish and second in the Coolgardie Sprint. Trying really hard. ALTAR BOY brought alternate form through the Northern Territory and showed why he’s a prolific winner.

RACE 6

GINGER BAKER looks a really nice eachway bet in the Boulder Cup of 2026. He was beaten nearly 6L by Opportunistic and The Jester’s Son in the Coolgardie Cup but given the pattern/conditions of the day he ended up in a nightmare of a position in running. He gets a 3kg weight swing on Opportunistic and Brad Parnham has ridden him to his last 8 wins. He’ll go around eachway in a Pay 1 – 2 – 3 and he’s a 2200m SW Cup winner. Different map and capable of turning the tables. OPPORTUNISTIC is the deserving favourite and considering he was first-up should only be fitter. Full of respect for him, just price. THE JESTER’S SON is going great guns and ran all the fastest sections in the Coolgardie Cup. LILLIAN is better than what she produced last start.

RACE 7

SCOTTISH LAIRD is the class runner of the race. The last three times he has raced in a 58+ he has carried weight and run really well and he does run for Tash Faithfull. He’s 77 days between runs (like now stablemate Blood Brother earlier in the program) so with any luck they’ll both go well off the freshen. TACITO has raced in 70+ or Open Class races his last three. Not disgraced in a Kambalda Cup, Goldrush or Coolgardie Cup and is nicely placed here back into a rare 58+. SPANGLEDSTAR was never going to be a chance the way the track was playing last start. Forgive and forget because her prior runs are all good enough to win this. LENDANEAR was really well found in betting last start and off the back of the strength of the win must be respected on the 54kg min here.
