Scott Embry’s Sunday Albany Preview Posted on January 2, 2026January 2, 2026 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 NAILED’EM won a barrier trial at Albany by 4.5L at his first public appearance for new trainer Sammy Faithfull and in his race debut he worked really hard in the early stages to cross and then got running, before being left a sitting duck in the home straight and was gunned down by Chiminy Blue. 1200 back to 1100 and drawn a gate to do less work. Tick, Tick. DARK OPAL has quite a high cruising speed for a maiden but doesn’t have a lot left in the tank when asked for an effort. 1100m is at the end of her range but barrier 1 is a huge help. Nice trial and solid return. MY TEA trialled up well and then caught the eye from a mile back in a leader dominated race at Pinjarra fresh. AMERICAN QUE TEE continues to knock on the door but is also now 50 days between runs. Numbers: 4 – 7 – 1 – 8 Suggested Bet – NAILED’EM WIN RACE 2 PARIAH’S THANKS has won 950m barrier trials in both preparations and was sent out a $2.70 favourite on debut at Bunbury on the Fibre Sand but never really looked comfortable at any stage. Liked the first trial this time around behind talented stablemate A Summer Fling (favourite in a 3 year old 1200 on Saturday at Pinjarra) and going to suggest that onto the grass this time around she can win first-up. 52.5kg after the Holly Nottle claim only enhances that view. DANCING SPIRIT has had a lot of educational trials before making it to the races. Pike riding in Albany on a Sunday will catch everyone’s attention. LOVIN’ ON ME can kick through to lead again. LONGTIMEBELIEVER is knocking on the door but this race actually probably has more depth than the pair at Narrogin. Numbers: 10 – 11 – 7 – 6 Suggested Bet – PARIAH’S THANKS WIN RACE 3 SOUTHERN FIRETALE was launched on debut in a 3 year old Plate. He was stepping out for the first time at 1400m after showing only moderate ability in the trials but it didn’t stop punters backing him into a $3.70 favourite ahead of horses like Lanfranco and Nintymilestraight. Carries only half a kilo more in a country maiden, have to follow that volume of support. HOPE TO ADMIRE comes through the $50,000 Westspeed Platinum maiden and that had far more depth than this. Just needs to overcome the tricky draw. CAPRICIOUS RULER looks like she’ll appreciate a bit of ground. BLINDING LUCK is trying hard and only has 50.5kg after the Giaan O’Donnell claim. Numbers: 5 – 4 – 9 – 12 Suggested Bet – SOUTHERN FIRETALE WIN RACE 4 WHY ME stepped up to a 1900 58+ and was able to get the better of Endless Joy who has since come out and run well in a 54+ at Pinjarra. After the claim only rises 2kg into an equally winnable race. He’ll stay out of trouble and slide into it from the 600. No reason why he can’t win again. MISTER POPCORN didn’t leave that cleanly from barrier 1 last start and ended up midfield in a race where they broke the field open in the middle stages and turned it into a true staying test. Even without sectional analysis you could tell that live: there were 4/5 horses gone at the 600 and the two who cleared out are both 3100m winners. Worry he gets crossed again? ZACKARIAH BEAU finds this 10L easier than his recent outing behind Perth Cup placed Forever Boy. BEAUTIFUL BARQUE was horrible last start. Shades on, forgive. Numbers: 1 – 5 – 4 – 2 Suggested Bet – WHY ME WIN RACE 5 POLYVANOVA was brave last start. She set a really strong tempo through the middle stages after doing a power of work to cross to the fence and then went down in the final stride at the hands of in form mare Fight In Flight. If she can cross to the top without copping too much pressure to her outside from likely breeze horse Niccy’s Affair then she’ll take running down. Ideal 4kg claimers horse. AMARLIE MISS is coming out of a C3 at Ascot that contained Helluva Goddess, Princess In Red and Come On Emma (races at Pinjarra Saturday). Out to 1600, back in grade, Pike on. SIZE MATTERS has improved heading down to Albany. KAMIKAZE FIGHTER showed his first bit of form last start. Numbers: 1 – 6 – 4 – 7 Suggested Bet – POLYVANOVA WIN RACE 6 CRUISE TO RIO should be a nice horse for the region but does need to clear out of this awkward grade. She’s a c62 rater so gets 61kg in a C1 and is being kept to the shorter course races early in her preparation. Going super but the weight is an ask so Austin Galati will need to give her the right run. QUESTIONEVERYTHING was no match for Bonny Rock (who has won again since) and is an improving type who will appreciate racing. BRAZEN BID is a Saturday winner who now heads to Stephen Sheehy, a trainer who can do wonders with a tried horse. Big watch. SANCTIONS is a consistent type of mare who can be ridden forward or back. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 3 – 7 Suggested Bet – CRUISE TO RIO WIN RACE 7 SKYTALKER had four runs for Michael Grantham in Perth and now returns to Albany with original trainer Indi Weinert. Back in grade, back in distance, blinkers off and considering he finished third to Territory Man and subsequent winner Rally The Troops he looks hard to beat. SETAGAYA is only an 1100m Northam maiden win but she’s shown enough ability to warrant big respect and the recent barrier trial win was sharp enough. Be shocked if the Durrant/Pike combination didn’t leave Albany without a winner or three. FANTAXTIC has thrived for Paul Hunter and won back to back C2 races. This is deeper but he’s in form. VOMO ISLAND was ridden for pure speed at his return to racing and won by nearly 4L. Had to breeze at Ascot in a far deeper race than he meets here and was found wanting. Can bounce back at his home track. Numbers: 2 – 12 – 7 – 1 Suggested Bet – SKYTALKER WIN RACE 8 CHARINO looks beautifully placed by Brett Pope. The former Max Simmonds Classic winner took out a 66+ 1200 on Westspeed Day when sitting wide for the majority of the race and beat home subsequent winner Prospector’s Pick in the process. He’s drawn to get all the favours in running and he’s a very talented animal. SUPERNATURAL charged home behind Jaz Session first-up and with that mare coming out and running second in the Summer Scorcher she becomes the one that many punters will want. WILD IMAGINATION has won her last two at Esperance under 64.5kg and 64kg. She’s been unreal. WINACLOCKSUMWHERE is the local horse bursting his way through the grades but this is a serious test against the Perth invaders and locally trained reigning winner Playing Rio who is rarely raced in the region. Numbers: 3 – 9 – 1 – 15 Suggested Bet – CHARINO WIN RACE 9 FLYING SOUTH has run second to Village Girl in a head bobbing finishing and then third in a 70+ to a flying Wineaclocksumwhere. He’s back in grade into a 58+ and most importantly he’s out to 1500m. Looks to be screaming out for ground now and even under the big weight impost from the outside barrier he looks very hard to hold out. GINGERQUEST is lightly raced and has always promised to work his way through the grades. Dominant last start in a C2 and gets in near the min. HESKET has been building and is through the Territory Man / Rally The Troops / Skytalker race. SACRED OATH put in a ripper behind Our Nemesis three back. Has been a bit hit and miss over the last 18 months. Numbers: 2 – 13 – 6 – 5 Suggested Bet – FLYING SOUTH WIN Quaddie (Race 6 – 9) 1,2,3,7,8 2,7,12 3,9 2,6,13 Market Market
