Scott Embry’s Saturday Broome Preview Posted on June 5, 2025June 5, 2025 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 COMMISSIONS has his first start for new trainer Kevin Collins and his last (only) win was a Gawler maiden over 1500m when leading and rolling. The sections of that race were impressive: first 900m 7.5L faster than average – meaning he ran them into the ground; the exact profile of Broome winners. If Jess Gray can cross he’ll be hard to run down. KINGS CALL put the writing on the wall at his Broome debut but does rise 4kg and likely gets crossed early. SCHUHBECK showed speed that most didn’t know he had fresh. PRIVATE SAPLING will continue to improve. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 5 – 3 Suggested Bet – COMMISSIONS WIN RACE 2 SHOULDER PATCH won first-up at 1200m and while I would prefer if he was getting out to 1400m second-up it was still a dominant and powerful victory of a horse who was targeted in betting. While he goes from a C2 to a 58+ this race doesn’t look to have that much more depth to it so expect he’ll be going close to making it two from two in the region. STREET MASCHINO enjoyed a great Broome season last year and can go well first-up. SIRIUS STORM gets huge weight off which will help. BOURBON BEAU is still really suspect on the kickback. Numbers: 2 – 4 – 7 – 3 Suggested Bet – SHOULDER PATCH WIN RACE 3 CRYSTAL VAIN is a massive look in for new apprentice Tiana Murray to kick home her first winner. His last 5 wins have been on dirt (4x Carnarvon, 1x Broome) and he even drops 2.5kg on his first-up win over a very similar line-up. Just keep working forward to at least the breeze and from there he should be going very close. RED REBEL missed away first-up and if he steps and leads he’s the big improver and main danger. STARRING KNIGHT was an encouraging first-up dirt run. BIN SHALAA drops 4.5kg on her first-up victory where she dug deep late. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 2 – 5 Suggested Bet – CRYSTAL VAIN WIN RACE 4 FAST JOHN, GRANITE ROCK and RULESQUE ran second, third and fourth behind Kia Ora Koe in the 1000m maiden on Opening Day. They now step to 1100m, will all benefit from the experience on the dirt and with the barrier draws going to side up with GRANITE ROCK to turn the tables on them after parking wide throughout. Pacifiers on, barrier 1 and would love to see him kick through and lead like he did on debut at Northam. FAST JOHN never gave it away after chasing from start to finish. Good signs. RULESQUE again trialled well but didn’t turn up on race day. CABLE GIRL a watch at her first-up run on the dirt. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 3 – 9 Suggested Bet – GRANITE ROCK WIN RACE 5 KIA ORA KOE was $7 into $3.40 at his first start on the dirt and didn’t let his loyal following down leading from start to finish for a near 2L margin. No doubt 1100m will stretch him and he rises to 60kg into a 50+ assignment, however, the general rule of thumb is that horses will get an extra furlong on the dirt compared to the grass so fingers crossed that’s the case with him! BERRY BERRY GOOD was jumping out of the ground late. Big danger staying out of trouble. ON THE CHARGE parked wide and kept coming at his WA debut. MAKE YOUR POINT will need to be out cleanly from barrier 1. Numbers: 1 – 4 – 9 – 8 Suggested Bet – KIA ORA KOE WIN RACE 6 DEAL OBTAINED and MAGNABURMA are through the same race where they stopped the clock 4L faster than average. It was the perfect Broome ride from Shorty Farrell and no doubt he’ll be on a jump and run mission again with Deal Obtained, however, with a 1kg weight swing and the dirt experience going to suggest that over an extra 135m MAGNABURMA can turn the tables. That’s the clear form reference and expect that they’ll dominate again. CHOIXWAY will only get better the more he races on the dirt. LAUTRE might take a run or two to find his feet again. Numbers: 8 – 7 – 1 – 4 Suggested Bet – MAGNABURMA WIN Quaddie (Race 3 – 6) 1,3 2,5 1,4 7,8 Market Market
