Chris Nelson’s Saturday Doomben Preview Posted on September 5, 2024September 5, 2024 | Posted by Chris Nelson RACE 1 Racing at Doomben kicks off with a distance affair & there look to be plenty of winning chances. I’m going to box a few up in exotic bets suggesting COUNTER (in form/maps well), UNCOMMON VALOUR (busting for 2000m now/poor gate), TRIPLE MONEY (looking for the rise in distance) & FLEUR DU MONDE (closed off well last start) are the main hopes. Getting them in the correct order is the hard part! Numbers: 7 – 2 – 10 – 4 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 2 SET TO SHINE just settled a little too far back two starts ago when closing off into the placings late, doubt she would have won however giving too much start didn’t help her chances. Last start ridden more positively from the front she gripped on doggedly to get the win, no reason she can’t perform well again on speed here with the gate & claim big positives. BETTER BE NORDY raced away to score last start when stalking the speed, maps similarly, just might prefer a wetter surface? No knock DIRT CHEAP whilst DRAMMATICA, who can be hard to catch didn’t enjoy the best of luck last start. Numbers: 2 – 4 – 8 – 9 Suggested Bet: SET TO SHINE EACH-WAY. RACE 3 The consistent DEVASTATING opened big odds before firming however is still around double-figures & a great each-way chance. Out the back courtesy of a wide draw first up at the Sunshine Coast he really found the line late weaving his way through the pack. Expect him a lot closer today from the wide draw & the claim for Emily Lang brings him in well at the weights. HELLUVA BARY can really find the line first up & that’s where he’s at today, not sure the inside gate is a positive however should he see daylight, lookout! Include RAINBOW CONNECTION who closed off very well last start & is a good fresh horse. Numbers: 1 – 2 – 4 – 8 Suggested Bet: DEVASTATING EACH-WAY. RACE 4 Tough race, doesn’t look a great deal between many of the runners & luck will likely play a big part in the result. I’ll lean to DAYTONA who although draws well likely will make little or no use of the good gate as he’s a far better chance running on from the back, Maloney rides him well, he’s a chance. I cannot catch RALPHIE however there was a lot to like about his fast-closing effort in a very slick sectional here last start. I SEE YOU COMING maps well & has been freshened. Numbers: 4 – 3 – 12 – 10 Suggested Bet: Box up top 4 selections in exotics. RACE 5 The second-up NAVAL TRADER looks nicely placed here second run back from a break. He didn’t go down without a fight first up beaten narrowly & follows a similar path to other campaigns having a 3 week freshen into the next run which is usually a successful one. HOOT ‘N’ HOLLER finally had some luck here last start after a wretched run, she stormed down the outside putting her rivals away in fine style, gate one here doesn’t read well however the field size is shrinking, that will help! ATMOSPHERE will lead & give plenty of cheek, only narrowly run down here last start. Numbers: 9 – 6 – 7 – 8 Suggested Bet: NAVAL TRADER TO WIN. RACE 6 Leaning to CABOCHE who just peaked on his run here last start however keep in mind the pattern was to ride him forward, unfortunately he missed the start & that was the end of that. Coming wide from the back he did a good job & can go a couple better this time. ROGUE BEAR beat him home on that occasion, continues to race well & looms at the main threat once again. Spotted ART’S OBJECT finding the line well last start, very hard to catch however on her day is very capable. Numbers: 8 – 6 – 11 – 1 Suggested Bet: CABOCHE TO WIN (small bets). RACE 7 Good race for the 3yo’s which sees the return of the very speedy MISHANI LILY. No doubt she will go up favourite & from an inside draw with the claim for Cody Collis will prove hard to run down. At this stage I have her on top however I have a good opinion of APUNTER who romped in on debut before valid excuses the latest, he’ll need luck from the gate however is far from out of it. KING SPIRIT gets a good run likely tagging MISHANI LILY, include. Numbers: 1 – 3 – 4 – 8 Suggested Bet: BACKING TOP 2 SELECTIONS TO WIN. RACE 8 ROCKRIBBED & SECRET PLAN come out of the same last start race with the former proving a little too solid however SECRET PLAN just wouldn’t lie down after breezing outside ROCKRIBBED in the run. There’s no advantage at the weights for either runner here however with the better gate & decent odds I’m going to lean to SECRET PLAN to turn the tables. EXCELLADUS is definitely worth including finishing close up behind TOM KITTEN last start whilst EN POINTE could be an improver. Numbers: 5 – 4 – 3 – 10 Suggested Bet: SECRET PLAN EACH-WAY. RACE 9 Gut feel is that TANNENBURG is looking for further than 1600m however I’m going to stick with him here & just hope than Jimmy Orman can rev him up a little in the gates & make some use of the good draw. Nothing really went right for him early in the race last start & although some will say he was unlucky I’m of the opinion he did have his chance to win over the final 200m. VICTORY WIN beat him home on that occasion, worse at the weights this time (2kg). SIZZLING GAL in the mix again, racing very well. Numbers: 13 – 6 – 4 – 1 Suggested Bet: TANNENBURG ($3.50 or better).
