It Pays To Follow Posted on March 14, 2023 | Posted by Digby Beacham DESENNEA Wednesday, March 8 @ Pinjarra It might be stating the bleeding obvious, but Desennea is a nice horse. A very nice horse. The Lark Hill trial leading into his debut run was super and importantly, he took that form to the races. Was given a lovely cart into the race thanks to a sweet Clint Johnston-Porter steer and lengthened beautifully in the straight to win by just under two lengths without being placed under considerable pressure. Still raw with significant upside. GUNMETAL GREY Saturday, March 12 @ Ascot This mare doesn’t win out of turn. Indeed, she has saluted in only three of her 31 lifetime starts and was last victorious in late August 2021. However, her past six months have been terrific. Was back in traffic and needing an out turning for home in the Bunbury Stakes and though she never looked like winning, stomped home to run fourth. It followed a fourth in the Listed Pinjarra Classic, an encouraging effort that came after she ran back-to-back seconds in the Jungle Dawn Classic and Starstruck Classic late last year before a fourth in the Group 3 La Trice. For a mare who hasn’t won beyond 1200m, she is racing out of her skin. BOURBON BEAU Saturday, March 12 @ Ascot This bloke has had a few homes during his career and on what we have seen recently, he seems content in the care of Chris and Michael Gangemi. A solid fourth fresh behind Excelestial, he handled the step-up to graduation company on the weekend well, running home into third despite encountering some traffic issues shortly after straightening. You would think a fifth win isn’t far away. GREAT HEIST Sunday, March 13 @ Ascot It’s fair to say you would be in arrears if you had backed Great Heist at every one of his 17 starts. If you’ve come this far, hang in there. A pay day is coming. The six-year-old’s last two starts have been eye-catchers, with the weekend’s luckless run the best he has turned in for some time. Was denied the space he needed at a crucial stage in the straight, but still only lowered his colours by a nose to Flower In The Wind. AMBER GLIDE Sunday, March 13 @ Ascot This well-related Nicconi filly didn’t have the rub of the green at her second start. Drew the fence on a day when those three and four and five wide were best suited, she was also slow to jump. It made her task all the more harder and while she was more than two lengths adrift of Starring Knight in the end, she powered through the line to give the indication a step to 1400m is going to be perfect.
