Scott Embry’s Perth Cup Day Preview Posted on December 30, 2021January 1, 2022 | Posted by Scott Embry RACE 1 SCANDOLO was stiff not to finished closer to them in the Thoroughbred Breeders Feature last start at 66+ grade. Finished 3L off Son Son, Apple Schnapps, Reign of Fire, Jedi Mind, What About Moses and All Day Session when encountering significant traffic on multiple occasions in running. Prior to that finished only 3.5L off Miss Vasari, Cristal Dane and Mercanto. It’s all strong form and it’s all winning form. WINE NIGHT is a capable mare on her day. Goes well fresh, proven weight carrier and a solid trial behind Billy Ain’t Silly. Like the map for her too. REQUISITION finished third behind Eeyore Wayz and Go Forward only two starts back. LACEVINSKY will likely scratch from Barker on Friday to be saved for this. Numbers: 5 – 2 – 4 – 3 Suggested Bet – SCANDOLO WIN RACE 2 COSTUME PARTY has finished third and then second behind Revitup at her last two outings since breaking through on debut in a 4 horse maiden. The Revitup form is arguably the strongest 2 year old form we’ve seen so far this season with her only defeat coming at the hands of Man Crush in the Crystal Slipper. Costume Party is attacking the line and the extra 100m looks a bonus for her. Just needs to find something to track into the race. SHEEZA BELTER was an eye catching trial winner. Had no blinkers in the trial either. Looks another capable Fernie 2 year old. GOLD KEEPER extended nicely once Paul Harvey got dinkum in the recent trial. SOFIA’S SYMPHONY kept coming in her trial and ran through the line strongly. Numbers: 6 – 8 – 3 – 10 Suggested Bet – COSTUME PARTY WIN RACE 3 BEADS looks very hard to beat again in this 3 year old 1000. Put the writing on the wall with a second to sharp filly The Front Bar this grade, track and distance two starts ago and then went to a 60+ Graduation to beat up on the older horses. Beat fellow 3 year old Bopping Blue in that event by 1.8L and meets him only 0.5kg worse at SWP. Should get an identical run in transit and should go close to reproducing the result. ROCKIN’ RUPERT was well commissioned last start stepping from maiden company into a 3 year old Plate. He should keep improving with racing. HE’S A SIZZLER gobbled them up from last first-up. The query is dropping back to 1000 with an extra 1.5kg. THOMAS MAGNUM is a raw talent. Numbers: 2 – 6 – 1 – 9 Suggested Bet – BEADS WIN RACE 4 ACROMANTULA hasn’t been seen for 7 weeks which is the unknown and red flag against his name, but if he can reproduce the effort that saw him lead for 998m first-up when nabbed on the post by The Front Bar then he’ll be very hard to run down. Takes luck out of his racing and even with some speedy types drawn inside him is still expected to find the fence and roll. GO FORWARD looks the logical danger. He is working his way through the grades nicely and is showing a booming turn of foot when saved up for one run. NIGHT VOYAGE will likely lob out the back and be saved for one final crack at them. BROOKLYN PIER will need some luck from a really awkward alley. Numbers: 4 – 8 – 6 – 3 Suggested Bet – ACROMANTULA WIN RACE 5 MISS VASARI is a wonderfully consistent mare who runs to a very similar rating each and every start. From the draw Brad Parnham should have her sitting midfield with cover and the way she’s been racing the step to 1400m looks suitable. Beat home Cristal Dane two starts ago and meets her on level weights and then was working to the line well along the fence in the Epona Classic (65+). In review the fence was probably the worst spot to be at that meeting and so her effort was definitely strong enough to win this. TRI FOR US comes from the same race and was impressive back in the field. Didn’t get much luck and was hitting the line as well as anything. GINGER BAKER resumed without a trial and can come to hand quickly. CRISTAL DANE is a new horse under Dion Luciani. Numbers: 7 – 8 – 1 – 10 Suggested Bet – MISS VASARI EACHWAY RACE 6 MISS CONTEKI and THE FRONT BAR are both very sharp get back sprinters. MISS CONTEKI has had six starts at the Ascot 1000 for 5 wins and THE FRONT BAR has had three starts at the Ascot 1000 and is undefeated. Only half a kilo between them and with the better barrier siding with MISS CONTEKI to extend her imposing fresh sprinting record. Burst through on October 9th and looked to have the race all wrapped up before she star gazed or shied at the big screen or shied at the winning post (or stopped?) and was beaten by Hot Zed. Simon Miller produces her fresh and she should get the right run tracking up. THE FRONT BAR will have her last start in Western Australia before heading to Victoria and it would be no surprise to see her measure up at this level. MERVYN is jump and run and always hard to run down. GEMMA’S SON has a senior on would have been targeted at this race. Numbers: 6 – 10 – 2 – 3 Suggested Bet – MISS CONTEKI WIN RACE 7 GINGER FLYER has proven herself as a versatile mare. She has won leading races, she has won sitting in races and from the barrier draw Holly Watson will have the option of either. There’s speed drawn in various parts of the line and from the ideal draw she can be ridden to suit conditions. Second to subsequent Starstruck Classic winner Beret three starts back, fourth behind Proconsent when working hard throughout two starts ago and then finished third behind God Has Chosen and Bruce Almighty last time out when put in a pocket before the corner. Always runs an eachway race and goes round an eachway quote. EM TEE AYE is knocking on the door and ready to win. His last two efforts have been enormous. HARRY THOMAS has turned a corner and is working back into form. BRUCE ALMIGHTY was excellent behind God Has Chosen. Just needs luck from the draw. Numbers: 4 – 8 – 6 – 7 Suggested Bet – GINGER FLYER EACHWAY RACE 8 BERET is in career best form. Took a long while to transition from consistent place getter to winner but in her last three starts she has looked the winner in running from a long way out and is attacking the line. Maps to get a gun run again and see no reason why she can’t continue on her winning ways now that she has worked it all out. DANCE MUSIC in hindsight was on the worst part of the track all meeting in the Starstruck. Was concerned she didn’t give any sort of kick, but in review she also never gave it away. CHILI IS HOT bypassed the Starstruck Classic by backing up off 7 days out of the Jungle Dawn into a 72+ 1600. Proved to be a wise decision by Graeme Ballantyne and she won well. Certainly not the best suited by SWP conditions as a 76 rater (meets Playing Marika 7.5kg worse from their last encounter) but she will get the trip and the run she needs. PLAYING MARIKA finished third in the Ascot Gold Cup last time she was at 1800m. Numbers: 4 – 1 – 5 – 6 Suggested Bet: BERET WIN RACE 9 MIDNIGHT BLUE has had an interrupted preparation but thought he showed in the ATA Stakes when 25 days between runs with bar plates on that he’s still on track to run a big race in the 2022 Perth Cup. Last year he finished third behind Neufbosc and Truly Great and when he returned to racing this preparation it looked like he would be the measuring stick for WA stayers. Bars come off, drawn ideally and gets in on the minimum. Profiles like a Cup winner. COCKNEY CREW could be the forgotten horse in the race. Did run second to Regal Power in the WATC Derby at 2400m and thought he gave sufficient cheek at WFA in the Van Heemst to be a live chance. PADDY’S SHADOW drops 5kg from the ATA and if she can get a cart into it three deep with cover has a turn of foot to make her a threat late. NEUFBOSC never got into it last start. Prior effort in the Kingston Town was very encouraging. Numbers: 12 – 9 – 13 – 3 Suggested Bet – MIDNIGHT BLUE WIN RACE 10 WRITTEN MATTER was all the rage going into last start when jumping a well-supported favourite in his first attempt at 78+ grade. Meets key rivals Chantorque and Resortman better at the weights coming back into a 72+ and while Clint Johnston-Porter jumps off we’ll stick with him. If Brad Parnham can find a back to follow mid-race he should be there abouts. Proven winner. CHANTORQUE went to a new level last start when ridden cold from a wide gate. She’s versatile, she’s classy and she goes better for Shaun McGruddy than anyone. Looks a great race for her. SON SON was dominant last start. He looks like he will measure up in this company. REIGN OF FIRE should get a soft run three back the fence. Numbers: 7 – 5 – 4 – 10 Suggested Bet – WRITTEN MATTER WIN Quaddie (Race 7 – 10) 4,8 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9 2,3,8,9,12,13,14,15 4,5,7 Market Market
