Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on January 3, 2020 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Best Bets RACE 2 NO.2 CLARICE CLIFFS Talented mare CLARICE CLIFFS resumes from a long spell when she tackles the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 84 Handicap (1100m) and she appears primed to return to racing as a winner. The five year old has only had six starts for three wins with two other placings and remains unbeaten after two previous first-up attempts. Astute trainer Greg Eurell has given the mare a solid trial in recent weeks which should have her fit enough to maintain her impeccable fresh record and the added bonus is that champion jockey Damien Oliver takes the ride. She’s a good class mare that appeals as one of the better bets of the day. RACE 3 NO.10 THE LAST NAPOLEON Trainer Kylie Vella only has a boutique size stable but continues to churn out the winners and THE LAST NAPOLEON looks well placed to continue the winning run when he contests the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1100m). The five year old was brilliant winning over 955 metres at Moonee Valley on December 13 and will relish the extra distance of this race. He has a good record over 1100 metres and, significantly, drops 5.5kg on his last start victory. Jockey Ben Thompson, fresh from a stint in Singapore, takes the mount and THE LAST NAPOLEON looks poised to record his fourth win from just 10 starts. RACE 9 NO.7 SKELM Last start winner SKELM looks a good value chance again when he contests the Benchmark 70 Handicap (2000m). The son of Animal Kingdom bounced back to his best form with a comprehensive win over 1800 metres at Sandown Hillside on December 11. The blinkers were applied on that occasion and certainly had the desired effect as he raced away over the final stages in a convincing display. The extra distance of this race is in his favour and he is well up to this class. It’s a even race with a few chances, however SKELM is a genuine winning hope at attractive odds. Market Market
