The Scout: Covington vs Masvidal Posted on March 4, 2022March 4, 2022 | Posted by The Scout Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal UFC 272 is back to Las Vegas and headlined by the welterweight clash between best friends turned enemies in Colby Covington (16-3) and Jorge Masvidal (35-15). Masvidal comes into this fight off the back of back-to-back losses to the welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. It has been almost a year since we last saw Gamebred in the octagon, a night that saw him brutally knocked out in the second round. Covington too comes into this following his own loss to Usman in November last year. Colby however went the full five rounds with the champ, getting better as the fight went on, a testament to his famous cardio levels. Pre-Usman, Masvidal was on a win streak that saw him score a TKO victory over Nate Diaz and two big KO victories over Ben Askren and Darren Till. His best chance here is keeping this fight standing, as he is the far more polished striker, and possesses legitimate one punch knockout power. Covington (as always) will push the pace, looking for any opportunity to shoot for a takedown. He’ll rely on his cardio, a large volume of strikes, mixed in with takedown attempts to pressure Masvidal every second of the fight. Masvidal’s takedown defense might be the single biggest factor in deciding the outcome of this fight. Gamebred has shown huge improvements in this area (on display both times against Usman) and I think he avoids the mat long enough to find an end to this feud.
