Deane’s Sandown Best Bets Posted on May 26, 2017 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Preview RACE 2 NO. 10 THE CARD PLAYERS The value runner at the Sandown meeting might be THE CARD PLAYERS when he runs in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m). The Mark Lewis trained gelding has been freshened since a solid win in very fast time over 1400 metres at Sandown on April 17. In winning that race, the four year old defeated five subsequent winners in what’s proving to be an outstanding form reference for this grade. He gets the benefit of Ben Thompson’s 1.5kg claim and represents a terrific each way gamble. RACE 5 NO. 6 GOATHLAND Imported stayer GOATHLAND will be fitter for one run back from a spell and looks a strong winning chance when he contests the Benchmark 90 Handicap (2400m). The son of Teofilo ground away honestly when finishing 5th behind ODEON over 2000 metres at Caulfield on April 29. He will be fitter for that run, should appreciate stepping up in distance and drops in weight on his last run. He has a fine record in this distance range and appears very well placed to record his third career win. SuperPick - RACE 5 NO. 6 GOATHLAND - Profit Plus – 25% (Win) RACE 6 NO. 10 PLEIN CIEL Another import is PLEIN CIEL, who created a favourable impression over summer winning four races on end and should be fitter for one run this campaign which sets him up nicely for the Open Handicap (1600m). The Darren Weir trained stallion worked home strongly to finish 3rd over 1400 metres at Warrnambool on May 4 and will be better suited over this distance. He drops 4.5kg on that run and looks to have more upside than his rivals. This is another rise in class for him but PLEIN CIEL appears destined for better things and should prove hard to beat.
