Royal Ascot Day 2 Preview

David Shortte’s Preview

Race One (Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes – 1000 metres 2 Year Old Fillies)

American Trainer Wesley Ward has had a marvellous record at this carnival in recent years with his youngsters and his 2 Year Old Filly Chelsea Cloisters is the current $3.30 Favourite to take out the first of the day. She won on debut in the US at Keeneland when eased down and winning by 8 lengths and looks a smart type in the making.

Servalan won a Listed event at Naas at her most recent outing and was strong to the line – off that effort comes in with good each way claims while Shades Of Blue won running away from her rivals last start and the runner-up to her has since won twice since to stamp the form.

I’m no knock on the Favourite Chelsea Cloisters but Servalan each way at double figure odds will get me for a little speck in race one.

Race Two (Group 2 Queen’s Vase – 2200 metres 3 Year Olds)

Tricky affair over the 2200 metres with a few winning prospects.

Stream of Stars appears one of Frankie Dettori’s better mounts of the night. Was an impressive 2000 metre Maiden winner at his most recent outing and while this is a step up in class showed enough in that run to suggest a bright future lies ahead.

Others to consider include Lynwood Gold, Southern France, Almoghared and the favourite Kew Gardens for Ryan Moore and Aiden O’Brien.

Race Three (Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes – 1600 metres Fillies and Mares)

Hydrangea is a dual Group 1 winning mare from the Aiden O’Brien stable and while she was below her best at her return effort if she can recapture her best would be taking care of business here.

If you want to oppose her you could make a case for Aljazzi, Urban Fox, Tribute Act and Tomyris.

I’ll stick with Hydrangea to return to her top.

Race Four (Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes – 2000 metres)

Cracksman was simply awesome in last year’s Champion Stakes here at Royal Ascot and has shown himself to be a very classy customer in this distance range.

Will go around at a cramped quote but is clearly the one to beat if anywhere near his top.

In looking for horses to include for the novelties Eminent and Poet’s Word can be included.

Race Five (Royal Hunt Cup 1600 metres)

With 30 runners in this field there will be no Tote betting available on this event. Fixed odds each way betting will be available.

A small play on Escobar each way.

Race Six (Group 3 Jersey Stakes 3 Year Olds – 1400 metres)

Could It Be Love and Emaraaty have been well backed in Fixed Odds markets to take out the last race of day 2.

I’ll stick with the Gosden trained Emaraaty each way to send us home a winner.

Headway and James Garfield are worth looking at for novelties.

Other plays on the day for me are Cracksman in multis and each way Servalan in the first and Emaraaty in the last.
