Deane Lester’s Moonee Valley Best Bets

RACE 3 NO.7 ROUSSEAU

ROUSSEAU resumes from a spell when he runs in the 4YO and Upwards Handicap (1500m) and a big run at each way odds can be expected. The five year old’s best form has been over further distances, however his recent trials would suggest that he is very sharp and in good form for this campaign. He races well at the Valley and elite rider Jamie Kah takes the mount. In a competitive race, ROUSSEAU appears over the odds and looks the best value of the day.

RACE 7 NO.3 INTERPRETATION

Imported galloper INTERPRETATION made an encouraging Australian debut at Flemington recently and has a terrific winning chance when he contests the Quality Handicap (2040m). The son of Galileo showed great promise in Europe last season with a win in the Vinnie Roe Stakes before finishing 4th behind HURRICANE LANE in the English St Leger which is elite staying form. He didn’t enjoy the best of luck when finishing 6th behind HEZASHOCKA over 2000 metres at Flemington on July 16. He was strong through the line and has been given an easy trial since that effort so his fitness levels should be improved. He seems to be the type that could develop into a Melbourne Cup candidate and this race appeals as the ideal stepping stone to show that talent.

RACE 9 NO. 11 SIXBYSIXTYTRHREE

On a very tough day, SIXBYSIXTYTHREE looks well placed and represents the best bet of the day when he contests the Dr Sheahan Plate (1200m). The Patrick Payne trained gelding should be at peak fitness following three runs back from a spell and comes off an excellent last start 2nd behind VERANSKOVA over 1100 metres at Flemington on August 6. He drops 5kg on that run, gets a senior rider with the in-form Billy Egan taking the mount and should enjoy a cheap run from the inside draw. He’s a solid wet tracker that should relish the conditions and will run well again.
