Deane Lester’s Flemington Best Bets Posted on May 22, 2020 | Posted by Deane Lester RACE 3 NO.7 ST EDWARDS CROWN ST EDWARDS CROWN will be fitter for two runs this campaign and appeals as a good each way chance when she runs in the 3YO Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m). The Shane Fliedner trained filly was badly held up for a run and went to the line under her own steam when finishing 7th behind BARBIE’S FOX over 1200 metres at Caulfield on May 9. She will appreciate a step up in distance and looks set for a peak performance here. In-form rider Jye McNeil takes the mount and ST EDWARDS CROWN will run a bold race at nice odds. RACE 4 NO.12 ALFA ORO ALFA ORO is an exciting type from the Matt Laurie stable that is shooting for a hat trick of wins when he runs in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). The four year old has been freshened since dominant consecutive wins at Pakenham and has built the impressive record of three wins and two placings from five starts to date. He is getting fitter with every run after a 20 month injury enforced layoff and should relish the heavy track conditions. This is his toughest test to date but he’s a good talent that should continue on his winning way. RACE 7 NO.10 AUSSIE NUGGET AUSSIE NUGGET is enjoying a good preparation and looks the one to beat when he runs in the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1800m). The Anthony Freedman trained gelding scored a good win over 1600 metres at Bendigo two starts back before running a strong 2nd from a wide barrier behind the in-form SHOT OF IRISH over 1800 metres at Caulfield on May 9. The key element here is that has drawn a better barrier and should race closer to the speed which will make his task much easier. He’s a reliable horse in this grade that looks one of the better bets of the day. Market Market
