RACE 5 NO.3 MERRIEST

The best value of the Caulfield meeting looks to be MERRIEST when she contests the Geoff Murphy Handicap (1100m). The Danny O’Brien trained filly resumed from a spell with an even 5th behind HEAR THE CHANT over 1100 metres at Flemington on March 18. She has trialled well since that run and did record a second-up win over top WA filly WHISPERING BROOK over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley last preparation. She is drawn for a good run from a middle draw and in-form rider Daniel Moor takes the mount. In a competitive race, MERRIEST represents great each way value.

RACE 6 NO.3 HANS HOLBEIN

Imported stayer HANS HOLBEIN burst back to winning form with an outstanding win over 2400 metres at Bendigo on April 1 and looks the one to beat again when he runs in the Robert Taranto Handicap (2400m). The Rob Hickmott trained gelding was due to back up at Caulfield last week but the meeting was abandoned prior to his race so he now has an extra week to recover from his near record-breaking run at Bendigo which looks even more suitable. Andrew Mallyon is riding in the best form of his career and takes the mount aboard HANS HOLBEIN, who represents the best bet of the day.

RACE 7 NO.11 MISS GUNPOWDER

MISS GUNPOWDER is a recent addition to the Hayes/ Hayes/ Dabernig stable and looks ideally placed to make a winning return to racing when she runs in the Benchmark 90 Handicap (1200m). The four year old races well fresh, races well at Caulfield and has trialled well in recent weeks for her first-up run. Leading apprentice Beau Mertens has been riding up a storm in recent weeks that now sees him sitting second on the Melbourne Jockeys Premiership and gets his chance for another winner aboard MISS GUNPOWDER.
