Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets Posted on August 26, 2022August 26, 2022 | Posted by Deane Lester RACE 1 NO.15 SPIRIT OF GOLD The Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m) kicks off the Caulfield program and there looks some terrific value with SPIRIT OF GOLD finding a suitable race at good each way odds. The Peter Moody trained mare hasn’t enjoyed much luck of late including a last start 8th behind HARMYSIAN over 1800 metres at Sandown Hillside on August 10. She endured a wide run on that occasion and now steps to 2000 metres which is a distance that she is yet to miss a place in three previous attempts. She drops down to 52.5kg from an inside draw and makes good appeal as a value bet on the day. RACE 7 NO.7 PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE is unbeaten in four outings to date and seems well placed to maintain her unbeaten record when she contests the Cockram Stakes (1200m). The daughter of Fastnet Rock hasn’t raced since winning the Creswick Series Final (1200m) at Flemington on June 18, however a recent trial win at Cranbourne showed that she has lost none of her form and fitness. She has the capacity to race near the lead making her own luck and represents the best bet of the day. RACE 8 NO.2 CASCADIAN The first Melbourne Group one race of the season is the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and CASCADIAN looks primed for a bold first up showing. The James Cummings trained gelding finished his last campaign with a win in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in April. He showed in a recent trial at Warwick Farm that he has lost none of the enthusiasm for racing and, if anything, is going better than ever. He has raced well without luck in these feature 1400 metres races at Caulfield in the past and elite rider Blake Shinn will be keen to get another Group one win on the board after his successful stint in Hong Kong. It’s a tremendous field with a host of chances however CASCADIAN will perform well and looks a great winning chance at each way odds. Market Market
