Deane Lester’s Caulfield Best Bets

RACE 1 NO.7 REGARDSMAREE

REGARDSMAREE has won two of his three starts since joining the Nick Ryan stable and looks the one to beat again when he contests the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1400m). The son of So You Think had blinkers reapplied last start when scoring a convincing win over this track and distance on January 26. If anything, this race sets up better for him with genuine speed drawn to his inside and he drops 4.5kg on his last run. It’s the lowest graded race of the day however that doesn’t stop it from being a good betting race and REGARDSMAREE appeals as the best bet of the day.

RACE 4 NO.7 IT’SOURTIME

IT’SOURTIME is unbeaten after two starts and looks a strong chance to make it a hat trick of wins when he runs in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m). The Danny O’Brien trained gelding overcame difficulties to win on debut over 1110 metres at Sale on January 3 before scoring a strong win against older horses over 1200 metres at Sandown on January 20. Whilst he steps up in grade, he goes back to his own age group and should appreciate a step up in distance. He is drawn for a cheap run and represents the best value of the day.

RACE 7 NO.6 SNAPDANCER

Talented mare SNAPDANCER has been freshened since a good run at the Magic Millions carnival and should take running down in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m). The four year old looked a touch unlucky when finishing 3rd behind KRONE in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Classic (1300m) at the Gold Coast on January 16. She will enjoying stepping back to 1200 metres which is a distance that she remains undefeated after three starts at the trip. Most importantly, she has a distinct tactical advantage on her main rivals in SIERRA SUE and PROBABEEL, who are likely to settle back in the field from wide draws. John Allen has developed a good rapport with the mare who looks one of the better bets of the day.
