RACE 1

CALAMARI RING was given an educational jumpout over 650m and  then tested against the older horses at Cranbourne and measured up winning her heat very impressively, she appears set for a big debut. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY caught the eye in a slow heat at Flemington and then was backed off late when the leaders quickened. A beautiful mover, no surprise to see him winning on debut, Damian Lane a key rider booking. ANGELIC RISE is an early running type with Lindsay Park and won her latest heat from the front at Caulfield Heath, Mark Zahra follows through to race-day. STREISAND has the all important race and straight line experience, received a great ride in defeat on debut, worth respecting.

RACE 2

The speed is moderate. SABAJ was scratched from Cup day on a soft track, he’s again drawn poorly, he was in work a long time before debuting for new stable in the G3 Silver Eagle where he was luckless in defeat, finds the right race if he gets luck in running. NATIONS CALL is the speed influence, a soft winner at MV last start defeating a sub winner, if left alone, he’s hardest to beat. RESET THE JAZZ has James McDonald and will follow that horse across to sit outside leader. Recent jumpouts suggest he can win although generally improves with a run. MARY ELIZA was plain first-up run, she’s unbeaten second-up and worth including.

RACE 3

BIG SWINGER could not have been any more impressive at the jumpouts leading in, he’s built a superb fresh record and provided he handles his first attempt at straight line racing, a big winning chance. VESTAS was outstanding first-up against pattern of the day and then in the wrong race at MV when aimed up, her luckless effort in the Red Roses here as a 3YO puts her in contention. NADAL had the tempo to suit fresh in the fast run Caulfield Sprint and peaked late, well drawn, expecting an improved showing here second-up after being scratched from a similar event on Oaks Day. FRONT PAGE is one of few speed runners engaged, James McDonald has been set a task drawn down low.

RACE 4

Key chances come through the slowly-run G3 Tesio, SHE’S A HUSTLER had the market against but showed intent from a wide gate which proved the winning move and was too strong for SEE WHAT I SEE over the concluding stages. More pressure expected this time which may suit the Begg-trained mare as she can tuck in behind with something to chase, back to Flemington is a bonus. BLINDEDBYTHELIGHT was the best of the closers at MV, bigger track, stronger tempo and rise to 2000m are all in her favour. ALALCANCE is the likely leader and is first-up at 2000m, how much pressure she receives dictates her winning chance, sure to be fit.

RACE 5

Even race, sets up well for BERKELEY SQUARE returning to his preferred course, he was closing late in the fast run Bart Cummings with a big weight and was then good against the pattern in the Geelong Cup, he ran 3rd in this race last year and is a key winning hope. BIRDMAN is the class runner and rises in weight, a solid effort in the Caulfield Cup, he needs the speed on. WHISKY ON THE HILL can improve sharply, no luck in a slow race at Caulfield and then pattern against in the Geelong Cup. He’s going ok, another hoping for speed in the race. ETNA ROSSO gets a perfect map from the inside draw and the trainer/jockey combination is striking hot.

RACE 6

Two market elects clear out from the rest. Superb training performance by the TENTYRIS camp to have him peaking in the Coolmore after a slow build to the prep. He was dominant in fast time, needs to repeat his grand final effort against the older horses to be winning from a less than ideal barrier, the light prep suggests he can. Newmarket winner JOLIESTAR produced a big win rounding them up from off the speed in The Shorts and then solid enough in the Everest, if she’s ready to peak the market will find her. GIGA KICK was just fair at the trials but improved to race-day taking out the Schillaci, needs to improve further into this. CABALLUS can’t be ignored despite the G1 challenge.

RACE 7

Should be a cracking spectacle. TREASURETHE MOMENT creates interest, mixed efforts this prep, ran well in the Cox Plate and has an opportunity to hold a forward spot behind the lead pair, with the fitness advantage coming back in distance, a winning chance. PRIDE OF JENNI was sat off in the Empire Rose and made them pay, she again dictates the speed bar the challenge of MR BRIGHTSIDE who can sit close with his 59kg and comes off an outstanding performance in the King Charles where he refused to yield until late, despite a hard run. CEOLWULF will be sweating on some pressure up front and found his best form in blinkers for the King Charles.

RACE 8

VIA SISTINA stands alone in this field as a deserved short-priced favourite, lead-ups were no guide in slowly run races and peaked when she needed to in the Cox Plate, holding off a game challenge from Buckaroo. Looking to complete the Cox Plate/Champions Stakes as did last year and without any WFA stars she is well-placed to do so. LIGHT INFANTRY MAN is a key speed influence and may get terms to suit. TOM KITTEN holds a placing behind Via Sistina at his only attempt at weight-for-age racing, where he lands from the draw is the query. PIER goes to 2000m for the first time. He’s an enigmatic galloper with a big finish, he will need the speed on.

RACE 9

ACTUALITY was impressive winning a weak BM74 at Seymour eased down on the line, progressive mare, she’s been put away and targeted at this and drawn favourably for her 1st attempt at straight racing. STOLLI BOLLI needs a win, gave away the front and the advantage when heavily-backed in the Dual Choice Plate, trying hard to the line, James McDonald takes over the should get a trail in behind the speedy BALASTIER who only knows one way, he will keep giving as he is tough. YALDI impressed at the jumpouts, defied a betting drift and was snicked first-up at Bendigo after a good beginning, he found the line strongly in 2nd. With a fast speed expected he will be charging home.
