Deane Lester’s Sandown Best Bets Posted on January 6, 2023January 6, 2023 | Posted by Deane Lester RACE 1 NO.6 ALL SASSED UP ALL SASSED UP resumes from a long spell when she contests the 3YO Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m) and looks primed for a big showing. The daughter of Shalaa made her debut when finishing 2nd in the Adelaide Magic Millions (1200m) before an honest effort at stakes level when finishing 3rd behind CROSSWINDS in the St Albans Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in March 2022. She has had two recent jumpouts at Cranbourne and impressed on both occasions. Leading rider Jamie Kah takes the mount and she makes strong appeal as one of the better bets of the day. RACE 4 NO.3 BLACK QUEEN BLACK QUEEN looks a good value chance at odds when she resumes from a spell in the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m). Whilst her winning distances have been at 2000 metres and beyond, the five year old has often contested much stronger races than this and she has been trialling nicely under light riding in recent weeks. The spacious Sandown Hillside circuit should suit her well and BLACK QUEEN appears over the odds. RACE 7 NO.4 THE NEPHEW The Patrick Payne trained gelding THE NEPHEW is working up to a win and gets his chance for his 4th career victory when she runs in the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1800m). He ran well from the back of the field when finishing 5th behind RIGHT YOU ARE in a leader dominated race at Moonee Valley on December 24. He drops significantly in class in this race and gets the benefit of Campbell Rawiller’s 2kg allowance in what looks a very compressed weight scale. This looks a competitive race but THE NEPHEW should prove hard to beat. Market Market
