AFL Power Rankings: Round 23 Posted on August 23, 2021August 23, 2021 | Posted by Digby Beacham 1. MELBOURNE Last week: 1 Stood Geelong a sizeable lead and then rolled up their sleeves and got to work on a Saturday night like only the very good sides do. Aren’t a standout when talking flag fancies, but deservedly hold the No.1 seed. Next up: Brisbane 2. GEELONG Last week: 2 One has to wonder whether the Cats lose to the Demons if Tom Stewart is playing? I suspect not. Most concerning for Geelong though is he is done for the year. Next up: Port Adelaide 3. PORT ADELAIDE Last week: 3 Similarly to Melbourne, were under enormous pressure early doors against the Western Bulldogs, but held their nerve before surging themselves. Two finals at home gives them a wonderful look. Next up: Geelong 4. BRISBANE Last week: 4 Made hard work of it, but now have a double chance and the guarantee of at least one final at the Gabba. Have some real arsenal forward of centre and Lachie Neale is finding the footy again. Next up: Melbourne 5. GWS Last week: 6 What’s not to like? The Giants hit the finals at full tilt and have a group of midfielders that will look at their opposing running division this weekend thinking they’re in prime position to pounce. Can upset the Swans. Next up: Sydney 6. ESSENDON Last week: 8 Have come up with a perfect opponent in the first week of the finals. Remember what happened a fortnight ago? The Bombers are healthy and have the weapons to stretch the Western Bulldogs. Next up: Western Bulldogs 7. SYDNEY Last week: 7 Could well have egg on my face by the end of Saturday’s Battle of the Bridge in Launceston, but how do the Swans cover the absence of Josh Kennedy and Callum Mills in the midfield? Vulnerable despite their outstanding second half to the year. Next up: GWS 8. WESTERN BULLDOGS Last week: 5 Premiership fancies a month ago, the Bulldogs are now struggling to keep their head above water. A win wouldn’t be a shock. Nor would a defeat. Midfield must rediscover its mojo … and quickly. Next up: Essendon Market Market
