Simon O’Donnell – Caulfield Cup Posted on October 15, 2016October 17, 2016 | Posted by Simon O'Donnell Looking forward to a big day of racing at Caulfield on Saturday with the main event being the 2016 Caulfield Cup over 2400m. It’s a really interesting race with a cross section of international stayers and local horses fighting it out, but I think the locals can win this year’s edition. Real Love trained by Darren Weir is in exceptional form: she had a last-start win at Moonee Valley that was very impressive, and taking that form into this race makes her the one to beat. Jameka – from the Ciaron Maher stable – is going to be in the race for a long time. His stable are running well, and he’s now embracing the the big carnivals and preparing his best horses. This young trainer is on the way up and has a great chance with his mare tomorrow. I also expect Sacred Master to help fill the placings with some of his old form in the Caulfield Cup looking for this trip on top of the ground, and with the master Sydney trainer Chris Waller at the helm should help the gelding run a very competitive race. At the end of the day’s racing once Hellbent wins the Caulfield Sprint they’ll be collectively saying there’s a star on the rise. I think this horse could be one of the best sprinters, if not the best, in 12 months time and Saturday will be a stepping stone towards that. It’s not an easy race in any way, shape or form; Wild Rain is racing in good, consistent form and will be on the speed and hard to run down, and with all the pace I expect in this helter-skelter over 1000m tomorrow, Viddora will sit back and have a crack at them along with Hellbent and I expect her to be very competitive over the last 100m and put her nose somewhere in the finish frame.
