Deane Lester’s Stakes Day Best Bets Posted on November 5, 2021November 5, 2021 | Posted by Deane Lester RACE 1 NO.5 HOSIER HOSIER resumes from a short break and is striving to maintain his unbeaten record in Australia when he runs in the Benchmark 90 Handicap (1600m). The five year old progressed from a maiden win over 1600 metres at Bendigo in June then won consecutive races at Sandown before scoring a determined win over 2000 metres at Flemington on August 7. The son of Camelot should make his own luck near the lead and appears to have more upside than his rivals ; one of the better bets of the day. RACE 3 NO.13 VETRUVIUS VETRUVIUS is a progressive horse from the Paul Preusker stable that is building a good record and can continue on his winning way when he runs in the Benchmark 80 Handicap (2000m). The four year old has only had five starts for two wins and three placings, and comes off a fast finishing win over 1700 metres at Geelong on October 20. Elite rider Brett Prebble has enjoyed a fruitful spring carnival with five group one wins and is building a good rapport with VETRUVIUS, who represents the best bet of the day. RACE 7 NO.8 CROSSHAVEN The Chatham Stakes (1400m) looks one of the most open races of the day, however that creates an opportunity for value and CROSSHAVEN appears to be the forgotten horse of this field. Whilst his three runs this campaign have appeared disappointing, the son of Smart Missile has been thwarted by unsuitable distances, big weights or soft tracks. The Hayes stable took the four year old back to the jumpouts at Flemington and CROSSHAVEN showed his customary speed to lead and win his heat suggesting that he is starting to hit his best form. His best form is well up to this grade and he looks a winning chance at good odds in an even race. Market Market
