Alabama Lass Ready to Take on the Big Guns in the Group 1 Moir Stakes Posted on September 5, 2025September 5, 2025 | Posted by TABtouch After winning on her Australian debut, New Zealand filly Alabama Lass is set to take on the big guns in the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley this Saturday, and anticipation is building around the talented 3-year-old’s first test against elite company. Trained by Lisa Latta, Alabama Lass arrived in Melbourne with a growing reputation, having won 4 of her 6 starts in New Zealand. Her recent victory in the Listed Ryder Stakes at Otaki showcased her blistering speed and tactical versatility—qualities that will be crucial in the pressure-cooker environment of Moonee Valley’s tight circuit. According to her team, the filly travelled over well and has settled in nicely. She won Flemington’s Listed World Pool Spring Classic in March and is ready for a step up in class. The Moir Stakes, run over 1000 metres, is known for its fast tempo and high-quality fields. Alabama Lass will face seasoned Group 1 performers, including Baraqiel, Rothfire, and Niance, making this a significant challenge. But Latta remains optimistic. Latta asserts Alabama Lass’s a quick turn of foot and professionalism will serve her well, despite the daunting task ahead. Alabama Lass will be ridden by Craig Williams, who has experience navigating Moonee Valley’s unique layout and is expected to give the filly every chance from a favourable draw. The Moir Stakes will serve as a litmus test for Alabama Lass’s spring ambitions. A strong performance could open doors to further Group 1 targets in Australia, including the Manikato Stakes and potentially even a tilt at The Everest, should she continue to impress. For now, all eyes will be on Saturday night at The Valley, where Alabama Lass will look to prove she belongs among the sprinting elite.
