VIDEO: Simon O’Donnell Caulfield Cup Posted on October 19, 2017October 23, 2017 | Posted by Simon O'Donnell This Saturday we see the running of the Caulfield Cup over 2400m – one of the most famous mile and a half handicaps in the world. It’s far from a vintage edition of the race and I’ll be avoiding horses on the quick back-up from last week, due simply to the firmness of the track and the fact the Herbert Power Stakes last week was run at a helter-skelter pace and could be a gut buster. With that being my thinking, I’m leaning the way of Ventura Storm who chased gamely behind the superstar Winx in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. Trained by by the in-form David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable, he has good 2400m form in Europe at Group level, has drawn a good gate and has the champion Damien Oliver aboard. It ticks a number of boxes and that’s the reason I have him on top. The danger for me is Marmelo, who is a quality stayer from Europe and is being targeted at the Melbourne Cup. He’ll be hitting the line strongly. I’m also keen to keep Humidor in the mix despite an average run in the Turnbull Stakes as he showed at weight-for-age level in the autumn that he can match it with the best horses in the land. Another race of interest on the card is the Caulfield Sprint and I’m leaning towards Snitty Kitty. Trained by up-and-coming trainer Henry Dwyer at Caulfield, she has great form coming into this and should push forward and give a good account of herself. And don’t forget TABtouch’s best ever racing special continues this weekend with the Caulfield Cup SuperPick. Back a horse to win and we’ll boost your odds, if it runs 2nd or 3rd you’ll get Money Back up to $100! Conditions apply and please gamble responsibly. Good luck! Any odds correct as at 9:30am 19 October 2017
