Deane’s Saturday Flemington Best Bets Posted on August 4, 2017 | Posted by Deane Lester Deane Lester’s Preview RACE 4 NO. 2 KILLARNEY KID KILLARNEY KID has built his fitness with recent racing and looks the one to beat when he contests the Nursery Handicap (2000m). The Darren Weir trained gelding missed a run on July 8 with a foot injury, so he was five weeks between runs when finishing a solid third behind PACODALI over 2000 metres at Flemington on July 22. This looks a great race for him as he has a imposing record at this track and distance of three wins and two placings from five previous attempts. On a tough program, KILLARNEY KID appeals as the best bet of the day. RACE 6 NO. 7 YOGI YOGI has been racing in terrific form and looks a strong winning chance when he contests the Benchmark 78 Plate (2500m). The five year old hasn’t missed a place in four runs this campaign and comes off a solid last start third behind GLOBAL GENTL over 2100 metres at Sandown on July 12. His racing style would suggest that he will relish a step up in distance and the spacious Flemington circuit should be to his liking. It’s a moderate standard of race for a progressive horse and YOGI looks ideally placed to record his fifth career win. RACE 9 NO. 12 PORTMAN PORTMAN has been a reliable horse racing through his grades and looks a genuine winning chance again when he contests the Benchmark 84 Handicap (1400m). The five year old has been very patiently handled by trainer Danny O’Brien and has built a solid record of four wins and five placings from 11 career starts. He has a genuine affinity for the Flemington track with two wins and four placings from 6 starts. The son of Makfi appears drawn for a good run again and gets the benefit of prominent apprentice Ben Thompson’s 1.5kg claim. This is a solid race with several chances, however PORTMAN is a reliable horse that will run well again. Bet Now
